4 Simple Yoga Poses to Relieve Piriformis Syndrome Pain

Piriformis syndrome occurs when the piriformis muscle deep in the buttock becomes weak due to overuse. The weak muscle begins to spasm and causes buttock pain, hip pain, and sciatica-like leg pain. When the buttock muscles are weak, they can cause a cascading effect on the back muscles, which can become weak and painful over time.

-The pigeon pose stretches the deep gluteal muscles, such as the piriformis muscle, and the hip extensor muscles, such as the gluteus maximus and the hamstrings.

-The triangle pose focuses on stretching the back in a side-bent position while keeping the feet wide apart. The triangle pose improves mobility in the spine, elongates the muscles in the back, and reduces stiffness in the lower back and hip.

-The tree pose focuses on the large gluteus maximus and gluteus medius muscles of the buttock and helps maintain balance and equilibrium in the body.

-The warrior pose helps activate and strengthen the buttock muscles.

The sharp, searing pain and numbing symptoms of piriformis syndrome often flare during the day with simple activities such as sitting, walking, driving, or lying down to sleep.

Piriformis muscle pain while sitting may be relieved by following these tips:

-Sit with a neutral, upright spine and avoid slumping or bending forward to help distribute weights evenly through the spine and across the pelvis.
-Ensure your feet are flat on the ground and your thighs are parallel to the floor.
-Use a footstool, if needed, to elevate the feet and reduce pressure on the pelvis and legs.
-Adjust the armrest of your chair so that it just slightly lifts your arms at the shoulders and helps take the strain off the shoulder and upper back.
-Place a rolled-up towel or lumbar support cushion to help maintain the arch in the lower back and prevent slumping forward.
-Avoid sitting in a cross-legged position, which may further irritate the piriformis muscle and sciatic nerve.
In general, if you have piriformis muscle pain, avoid sitting for long periods and take short walks or alternate between sitting and standing, if possible.

Activities such as putting on shoes, sitting, standing up from a sitting position, walking, and/or driving are commonly affected.

Buttock muscle pain may be treated with over-the-counter medications, heat and/or cold therapy, and gentle stretching exercises that target the buttock, hip, and lower back muscles. Using a foam roller or tennis ball to gently massage the gluteal region can help release trigger point pain in the superficial and deep gluteal muscles and relieve buttock pain.
Lifestyle modifications include using a supported posture while sitting and avoiding sitting on hard or uneven surfaces, which help reduce stress on the buttock and pelvic structures.

How To Fix Your Lumbar Pain With Stretches

Lumbar pain can be caused by a variety of factors, including poor posture, muscle strain, or spinal misalignment. Chiropractors are trained to identify the underlying cause of your pain and develop a personalized treatment plan to address it.

Some of the benefits of chiropractic care for lumbar pain include:
-Child's pose: Kneel on the floor and sit back on your heels. Stretch your arms forward and lower your forehead to the ground. Hold for 30 seconds.
-Knee-to-chest stretch: Lie on your back with your knees bent. Slowly bring one knee up to your chest and hold for 15-30 seconds. Repeat with the other knee.
-Cat-cow stretch: Start on your hands and knees with your back flat. Arch your back and lower your head toward the ground (cat pose), then lift your head and curve your back (cow pose). Repeat 10 times.
-Piriformis stretch: Sit on the floor with your legs out in front of you. Cross one leg over the other and gently pull your knee toward your opposite shoulder. Hold for 30 seconds and switch sides.
-Spinal twist: Lie on your back with your knees bent. Keeping your shoulders on the ground, lower your knees to one side and hold for 30 seconds. Repeat on the other side.
