How many words should my child be saying?

Many parents wonder when their little one should start talking and how many words they should know. Language development happens quickly in the first few years, but it’s important to remember that every child develops at their own pace.

Here’s a general guide:
💜 12 months: A few words, usually tied to familiar people or objects.
💜 18 months: Vocabulary grows to around 20–50 words.
💜 24 months (2 years): 200–300 words, starting to combine words into short phrases.
💜 36 months (3 years): About 900–1000 words, forming 3–4 word sentences.

Tips for supporting language development:
🌟 Talk often: Describe what’s happening around you.
🌟 Read & sing: Introduce new words through books and songs.
🌟 Model language: Repeat and expand on what your child says.
🌟 Use gestures: Pointing and nodding support communication.
🌟 Celebrate attempts: Every word or sound counts!

If your child isn’t using words by 18 months or combining words by 2 years, contact us for a speech evaluation. Early support makes a big difference! 💜

Tomorrow is Earth Day! Head outside (if the weather allows) and try this simple activity together. Along the way, you can help build speech and OT skills by asking questions, describing what you find, and following directions.

Learning, movement, and fresh air all in one activity—perfect for celebrating our Earth! 💚

At Monkey Mouths, the monkey bars and swings are powerful therapy tools! 💪✨

These activities help build proximal stability (strength and control in the core and shoulders) and distal control (precise movements in the hands and fingers). This directly supports skills like grasp, coordination, and handwriting. ✍️

So while it may look like play, these movements are helping little bodies grow stronger and more controlled—setting the stage for success in everyday tasks! 💛

In honor of National Haiku Day, our favorite monkey mascot is getting poetic—mixing a lot of heart and all the therapy magic into 5-7-5. Who knew speech + OT + a monkey could sound this good?

Can you do it? Make a fun, family activity out of writing your own Haiku. 3 lines - 5 syllables, 7 syllables, and then 5 again! Any subject you want. If you give it a try, drop it in the comments so we can all enjoy the creativity! 👀✨

Wondering if occupational therapy could help your child? OT supports everyday skills that help kids feel confident and independent. Some signs extra support may help include:

• Trouble with buttons, zippers, or utensils
• Avoiding messy play or certain textures
• Big emotions that feel hard to manage
• Difficulty with handwriting or coloring
• Struggling with daily routines like dressing or transitions

💙 An OT evaluation can help identify strengths and areas to support your child’s growth.

OT Tip of the Day 🧠✨

Activities that combine movement, grasping, and sorting aren’t just play—they help children:
💪 Build strength in arms & core
🤝 Practice using both hands together (bilateral coordination)
🎯 Improve focus, control, and visual perception
✋ Develop fine motor skills for everyday tasks
