Are you experiencing foot pain? Are your shoes the problem?

👟 Supportive Shoes Matter — From a Podiatrist’s Perspective

Your feet take thousands of steps every day. Shoes with proper arch support, stability, and cushioning help control foot motion, absorb shock, and reduce strain on muscles, tendons, and joints. Supportive footwear can help prevent common problems like Plantar fasciitis, bunions, tendon pain, and fatigue — and keep you moving comfortably long term.

💡 If a shoe bends in half or twists easily, it’s likely not doing your feet any favors.

🦶 Understanding Peripheral Neuropathy

Do you experience burning, tingling, or numbness in your feet? You may be dealing with peripheral neuropathy — a condition caused by damage to the nerves outside of the brain and spinal cord.

🔎 Common Causes:

• Diabetes (most common cause)
• Chronic alcohol use
• Vitamin deficiencies (especially B12)
• Chemotherapy
• Nerve compression or injury
• Autoimmune disorders
• Viral illness
• Thyroid conditions

⚡ Common Symptoms:

• Burning or electric-like pain
• Tingling or “pins and needles” sensation
• Numbness or loss of feeling
• Sharp, stabbing pains
• Increased sensitivity to touch
• Balance problems

Neuropathy often starts in the toes and progresses upward. Because numbness can reduce protective sensation, patients are at higher risk for wounds and infections.

🩺 Treatment Options:

Treatment depends on the underlying cause and severity. Options may include:

• Blood sugar control (for diabetic neuropathy)
• Oral medications for nerve pain
• Topical compounded creams
• Vitamin supplementation (if deficient)
• Custom orthotics to reduce pressure
• Physical therapy
• Peripheral nerve stimulators – advanced implantable devices that help block or modulate pain signals for chronic, treatment-resistant neuropathy
• Lifestyle modifications

Early diagnosis and treatment are key to preventing complications.

If you’re experiencing persistent foot numbness or pain, don’t ignore it — schedule an evaluation to protect your feet and improve your quality of life.

🦶 What Is a Hammertoe?

A hammertoe is a toe deformity where the toe bends or curls downward at the middle joint, often causing it to rub against shoes. Over time, this can lead to pain, corns, calluses, and difficulty finding comfortable footwear.

✨ Treatment Options
Treatment depends on the severity and may include:

Shoe modifications and padding to reduce pressure

Stretching or splinting in early stages

Custom orthotics to improve foot mechanics

In-office care for corns and calluses

Minimally invasive or surgical correction when conservative care is no longer effective

Early treatment can help prevent progression and relieve discomfort.

📅 If you’re experiencing toe pain or notice changes in the shape of your toes, a podiatrist can help determine the best treatment plan.

🦶 What Is Porokeratosis?

Porokeratosis is a common foot condition that causes small, painful callus-like lesions—often described as feeling like you’re “walking on a pebble.” Despite how they look, these are not warts and are caused by abnormal buildup of hardened skin over a pressure point.

✨ Treatment Options
Porokeratosis can usually be managed effectively with:

Careful in-office debridement (removal of the thickened skin)

Padding or offloading to reduce pressure

Custom orthotics to prevent recurrence

Topical treatments in select cases

With proper care, discomfort can be significantly reduced and flare-ups minimized.

📅 If you’re experiencing ongoing foot pain or callus buildup, a podiatrist can help determine the cause and create a personalized treatment plan.
