So I have a great example of some CBT (thoughts=feelings=behavior) work I had to do myself this morning!
I have decided to get active, watch what I eat, and try to lose some weight before my daughter's wedding this year. When my alarm went off this morning (after a super busy weekend), I really didn't want to get up but I did.
Thought option #1-I don't want to get up, and honestly, no matter how hard I try, I don't seem to lose weight anyway. I might as well just enjoy my sleep and stop trying. (leading to defeat and frustration, and honestly, not that much more sleep)
Thought option #2-It is such a beautiful morning! I even got to watch the sunrise! God is so good and even if I don't lose the weight, the time spent working on my body and soul is well worth it. I am worth it. (leading to optimism, being proud of myself, and finding my worth in the creator of the sunrise!)
What didn't change? The fact that I need to get up and work out.
What did change? My thoughts, and consequently my feelings about this event, and honestly the rest of the day!
You often can't change situations in our life, but changing our thinking is powerful. What we choose to focus on and think in any given situation will set us up for either victory or defeat!
Try it today! Look for God's blessings even when things get hard!
Therefore I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God-this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the RENEWING of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is---his good, pleasing, and perfect will.
