Silence in a meeting isn’t always a sign of agreement; often, it’s a sign of a dying culture.
People don’t stop speaking because they’ve run out of ideas. They stop when it no longer feels safe to be heard. When feedback is met with defensiveness, or when "speaking up" results in being sidelined, the human brain shifts from innovation to survival.
As leaders, our primary job isn't to have all the answers—it’s to protect the environment where the answers can emerge. Psychological safety isn't a "soft" perk; it is the bedrock of loyalty and the engine of growth.
If you want to know what your team is really thinking, look at your reaction the last time someone challenged you. Did you build a bridge or a wall? Let’s lead with the decency that invites voices back into the room.
