Chiropractors have long been called-upon to help Mothers during their pregnancy. The pelvis & lower back go through tremendous changes and stress during weight gain and body shift.
The pelvis joints (not the hip joints) commonly get a to function in one or more ranges-of-motion. This complex problem involves the joint structures, the musculature of the pelvis and lower extremities and the nervous system control\feedback. To put it shortly, everything tightens-up and gets sore & weak. This pelvis dysfunction is so common to humans, most people demonstrate this disorder (as common as cavities in teeth). Pelvis joint fixation is especially noticeable in athletes that work-out the trunk & thighs.
When a patient demonstrates a stuck pelvis on one side or the other, profound muscular contractions occur in all skeletal and smooth internal muscle groups. The patient is in stress. They may complain of hip or butt pain.
This problem is especially important for the pregnant woman. Pelvis fixation (stuck pelvis) causes chronic muscle spasms in the pelvic basin muscles, including the uterus & va**na. This leads to weakness, soreness and contraction stress. Normal va**nal delivery is difficult in this condition. Many a Mother has had the Baby removed by cutting it out through the body of the Mother. :-/ The reasons given for why this must be done are not clear. Yet, under the stress of delivery that does not progress, the Mother easily makes this choice, of course. My postulate (and experience) is that chiropractic adjusting of the pelvis joints before Baby delivery improves the odds for a normal function delivery and reduces the body damage to the Mother. Additionally, when the Mother is told she is "late" and induction of labor is scheduled, chiropractic adjusting is often helpful in releasing pelvis fixation & stress, leading to a normal delivery. Chiropractic adjusting of the pelvis joints has been used for decades to jump-start labor & delivery. It is quite safe to adjust pregnant women @ all days of her gestation.
case study: age 28 pregnant woman presented to my office yesterday (Feb 14). She was scheduled for induction of labor on Monday. Patient demonstrated fixation of the right sacral\iliac joint, resistant to post-inferior line of function. Patient was place on a Zenith Hi\Lo chiropractic table, with the abdominal section locked-out. (This allows the belly to distend into the table with no compression of the Baby. Mothers LOVE this feature of the Hi\Lo, it relaxes their abdomen.) Mother was carefully and specifically "adjusted" (spinal manipulation) by hand only (no mechanical devices) for the correction of any vertebral subluxations, including upper-cervical. Patient was then taken to a flat-bench firm padded table for side-posture chiropractic adjusting of the right pelvis fixation. Chiropractic adjusting of the pelvis employs very precise angles of gentle thrusting to release the stuck pelvis function. Immediate results are noticed by the patient. They often gasp and the whole trunk musculature collapses in relaxation. The patients often describe a condition of euphoria.
I got the call this AM the Mom delivered the Baby this morning perfectly on her own. :-) Maybe chiropractic adjusting had something to do with it. idk. But I love what I get to do.
