Spring changes everything.
Don’t let it change your healing.

Your skin and wounds don’t automatically adjust with the season.

At Northeast Surgical Wound Care, we see this shift every year. Wounds that were improving suddenly stall, worsen, or reopen, not because treatment failed, but because routines change.

More activity = more pressure and friction
Warmer weather = more moisture and skin breakdown
Footwear changes = increased risk, especially for diabetic patients
Busier schedules = missed or delayed appointments
We see this every day.

And one of the most common misconceptions?
“It looks better, so it must be healed.”

Healing skin is still fragile. Without proper protection and consistent care, even small changes can reverse progress quickly.

Spring changes your routine, and that can change your outcome.

If a wound is:
⚠️ Slowing down in healing
⚠️ Reopening
⚠️ More irritated than before

That’s not something to wait on.

At NESWC, we focus on more than closure. We protect skin integrity to keep wounds healed.

Consistency matters. Early intervention matters.

"I have been a nurse for 13 years and have attended numerous wound inservices. I have learned more today about wound care than I have ever learned. Thank you!"

This feedback came after a recent wound care education session led by Stacie Lind, BSN, RN, our Clinical Services Coordinator, at one of our long-term care partners.

At Northeast Surgical Wound Care, education is one of the ways we support the teams we partner with every day. Our sessions are designed to build on the experience nurses already bring to the bedside while strengthening confidence and practical strategies for wound prevention and healing.

These education sessions are provided complimentary for our partner facilities, because our goal is to be more than a service provider. We aim to be a trusted clinical partner and support system for all things wound care.

Thank you to our incredible partners and the dedicated nursing teams who continue working every day to provide exceptional patient care while strengthening wound prevention and healing for the residents they serve.

The Link Between DVT and Venous Wounds

Did you know DVT can increase your risk for chronic venous wounds?

After a DVT, some patients develop Post Thrombotic Syndrome. This condition damages the veins and can impair blood flow back to the heart.

Over time, this can lead to:
• Chronic leg swelling
• Skin discoloration
• Thickened or fragile skin
• Venous leg ulcers

Venous ulcers are often slow to heal and can significantly impact quality of life.

Proper vascular evaluation, compression therapy, and early wound care intervention are critical to preventing complications.

If you or a loved one has a history of DVT and is experiencing leg wounds, early treatment matters.

🌟 Provider Spotlight: Rachel Deaton, CNP, Southwest Ohio Region

When we asked Rachel to be featured in this week’s spotlight, her response was:
“Why in the world would you spotlight me?”

Because this is exactly who she is.

Rachel is known across NESWC for her clinical expertise and unwavering dedication to the facilities and patients she serves. She consistently steps up wherever she is needed, ensuring dependable coverage and continuity of care.

When asked what motivates her to go above and beyond, she shared:
“My patients are always my number one priority. I want to provide them with the very best care possible. I’m fortunate to work with wonderful facilities that truly allow me to be part of their team. It’s important to me that they know they can depend on me and that I’m always here to support them.”

To Rachel, true partnership means inclusion and collaboration.
“Being a true clinical partner means including the patient, their families, and the facility staff in every discussion and decision. It’s imperative that we work together to achieve the patient’s goals. We all come from different experiences and backgrounds, and I truly value the opportunity to learn from one another and share knowledge.”

Her philosophy of care says it best:
“Quality patient care comes from the heart.”❤️

At NESWC, this is who our providers are at heart, clinically strong, deeply compassionate, and always willing to go the extra mile for the patients and facilities we serve.

March is Deep Vein Thrombosis Awareness Month

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) occurs when a blood clot forms in a deep vein, most often in the leg. While it may begin with subtle symptoms, DVT can become life threatening if the clot travels to the lungs.

Know the warning signs:
• Leg swelling
• Pain or tenderness
• Warmth in the leg
• Skin discoloration

DVT is not always just a temporary event. It can lead to long term circulation problems that affect vascular health and increase the risk of complications, including chronic venous wounds.

Early recognition and prompt medical care matter!

At Northeast Surgical Wound Care, we are committed to raising awareness about vascular health and its connection to wound prevention and healing.

Healthy veins support healthy skin.
