Performance Wednesday! Swimming edition!! Want to know what the research says about getting faster in the water? You need to get out of the water to make your strength gains initially. Train for maximum strength on land to increase propulsion in water. Optimally train >75% 1RM at low reps with high intensities. High rep routines do not show significant strength gains for swimming. Focus on Starts, and Turns- working on explosive movements such as squat jumps, counter movement jumps, and progressive Plyometrics. Training aids (ie: swim paddles)that are specific to swimming do not show a significant improvement in propulsive power in the water and are considered more swim endurance aids due to the lower intensity. Instead, use dry land training as strength stimulus, then apply the new strength to the water with clean swimming. Younger, less experienced swimmers will have a greater training affect in a shorter amount of time than more experienced swimmers which will need to train longer to get their desired training effect. Therefore, it is recommended to continue strength training throughout the entire swim season. reference: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9100337/
