A dear colleague and awesome human, Leilani Maxera, is offering clinical supervision to folx in Hawai'i. I have consulted with Leilani on a number of topics and learn something from them every time we chat.

Please see their message below and inquire directly with them if you have any questions. Please also feel free to share this with your colleagues who may benefit from Leilani's supervision group!

"Are you BIPOC/a person of the global majority and working towards social work licensure in Hawaiʻi? Starting in August 2024 I will be offering a clinical supervision group twice a month via Zoom, accessible to folks on all islands. This group will be offered on a sliding scale basis.

We have a shortage of licensed practitioners in Hawaiʻi, and we have a shortage of people of color doing this work, especially Native Hawaiians. This offering is my attempt to do my part in paying it forward to support the next generation of social workers and leveling the playing field.

Expect clinical supervision from a harm reduction-based, abolitionist and disability justice-minded approach.

Day to be determined soon, 6pm HST.

If you are interested in joining this group, please contact me -

My business partner and I were recently invited to talk about how perfectionism can get in the way at times when we are trying to build something important to us.

It was a fun and honest conversation and I hope you enjoy it!

Someone I dearly love died a few weeks ago. Grief is painful and I don’t know that I have words to really describe its magnitude.

In search of some direction for my broken heart and racing mind, I stumbled upon this book. 📖 It’s not taking away the pain, but it is helping me feel less alone in my grief.

If you’re living with grief, I highly recommend this book to give you some space to be messy, complicated, and human.

Take care of yourselves and one another. 🫶🏻

Does the idea of small talk make your eyes glaze over?

Do you ever feel socially awkward, anxious, or shy?

Do people ever tell you that you "should be more extroverted"? 🙄

You're not alone! These are topics that clients and I discuss in therapy often.

To learn more, check out the Wondermind article I was featured in that focuses on social awkwardness and small talk here 👉 : https://www.wondermind.com/article/ice-breaker-questions/

I'm incredibly grateful to the Yale LGBTQ Mental Health Initiative for including me in their training course on LGBTQ-Affirmative Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

I'd also like to express my sincere thanks to them for sending me a copy of the Transdiagnostic LGBTQ-Affirmative Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Therapist Guide!

The Yale LGBTQ Mental Health Initiative is doing crucial work in advancing LGBTQ-affirmative therapy training and resources for clinicians. I'm honored to have been included and to incorporate these learnings into my own clinical practice.

Lastly, thank you to the Pride Center of Terre Haute Inc. for referring me to this training. The Pride Center of Terre Haute is always looking for donations and volunteers. Please consider checking them out and supporting the awesome work they're doing!

I want to extend my sincere thanks to the Indiana Housing & Community Development Authority for hosting me as a speaker at last week's 2024 Spring Development Conference. It was an honor to share insights on working with LGBTQIA2S+ folx in direct practice.

The conference provided a valuable platform to discuss best practices, challenges, and strategies for ensuring inclusive and affirming services for LGBTQIA2S+ folx seeking housing and community support. I appreciated the opportunity to engage with fellow practitioners, advocates, and decision-makers dedicated to advancing equity and understanding.

Thank you to the organizers for their efforts in creating space for these important conversations. And thank you to all who attended my session - I'm grateful for your thoughtful questions and commitment to this work. Together, we can build more welcoming and supportive communities for LGBTQIA2S+ folx across Indiana.

I want to thank Newsweek for interviewing me to talk about the research and data that shows that Gen Zers and Millennials are struggling with mental health concerns such as loneliness.

While we have made strides in reducing stigma and increasing access to mental healthcare, it's clear there is a lot of work to be done.

I'd love to hear from you with your thoughts!

Happy Social Work Month to all of my colleagues out there. I see you, I value you, and I am grateful to work alongside you to build stronger communities--both through your work that is seen and unseen.

To my fellow Social Workers - I want you to know that you matter. Your dedication to uplifting others does not go unnoticed. I appreciate how you show up day after day, advocating, comforting, empowering, and guiding.

Though the work is challenging, your perseverance and compassion bring hope. You walk with people during their darkest moments, helping them forge paths forward.

This month, I hope you feel celebrated and supported just as you make others feel. To each of you--thank you for hearing the cries of the vulnerable and answering with open arms. I am honored to be in this work by your side as we strive to make the world a little more just, one act of care at a time.

Every year, my friend always wraps up the year by celebrating people’s accomplishments. It always brings me so much joy to see this post and all of the cool, fun, quirky, and interesting things people have going on in their lives.

As we wrap up February, I'd love for us to take a moment to celebrate and uplift one another—and ourselves.

Let's move beyond comparison and competition, and instead focus on the unique gifts, talents, and fun moments present in each of our lives.

So, I want to hear your brag from February—something you accomplished or enjoyed this month, big or small.

It could be a personal goal met, a fun memory made, a new skill learned, quality time spent with loved ones, or anything else you find meaningful.

I'll start! I closed my Hawaii practice and officially opened one in Indiana. Not only am I getting to see my family more, but my sleep has also drastically improved in just a few short weeks!

I can’t wait to hear your February bright spot!

I had the privilege of spending time on Friday with a few members of the incredible team at the Pride Center of Terre Haute Inc. This non-profit organization provides support, resources, and community for q***r folx in both Terre Haute and across Indiana.

During my visit, I learned more about the history of the Pride Center and the critical services they offer. Their dedicated and compassionate staff are working hard to meet the needs of q***r and questioning youth, adults, and families in the area.

I was so inspired by their passion for fostering community, dismantling discrimination, and empowering q***r people to live as their full, authentic selves. I look forward to finding more ways to collaborate and further our shared goals of acceptance, justice, and pride.

I want to thank the Pride Center of Terre Haute for welcoming me so warmly and taking the time to share their important work.

Organizations like this one are true pillars for the q***r community by creating safe and affirming spaces for people to connect authentically. The Pride Center makes Terre Haute and Indiana a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive place.

If you'd like to learn more about their services or donate to their mission, please check out their website at https://pridecenterterrehaute.org/.
