When to start 400 mcg of Folic Acid?

Getting enough folic acid (the synthetic form of folate) isn’t just a smart choice during pregnancy. It may be wise to supplement when trying to conceive, too.

Folate supplementation prior to conception has been associated with a greater chance of getting pregnant, improved success with fertility treatments, and reduced risk of neural tube defects in the baby.

For pregnant women, the RDA of folic acid is 400 micrograms (mcg). Additionally, it is recommended that women who are planning to become pregnant supplement with a minimum daily dose of 400mcg folic acid starting at least 3 months before becoming pregnant.

Some patients with particular medical history may need up to 5mg of folic acid daily. Remember to discuss your pre-conception plans with your doctor.

Here are some tips that you can use to help strengthen your nails.

1. Take a biotin supplement
Biotin is a B-vitamin and hence not stored by the body, so you have to ensure that you consume it daily.

2. Minimize soaking your nails in water for too long
This can cause your nails to become weak and brittle. You can wear gloves where possible.

3. Stay hydrated
Drinking enough water is essential for health, and nail health is no exception.

4. Pay attention to your diet
A diet that’s deficient in crucial vitamins and minerals can affect your entire body, including your nails.

5. Be careful about the products you use
Look for nontoxic nail polishes and soaks as well as acetone-free polish remover.

6. Avoid using gel or acrylic nails, if possible

7. Give your nails a break from polish

8. Keep your nails on the shorter side
Long nails are more likely to break and be caught on things.

9. Use lotion on your nails
If you’ve tried multiple things for several weeks and have not noticed any change in your nails, you should see your doctor.

Brittle nails may be a sign of underlying health issues, such as anemia, thyroid disease and others.
