Life's Journey Home Hospice & Inpatient Facility

Life's Journey Home Hospice & Inpatient Facility Inpatient Facility, Home Hospice, or Palliative Care in Indianapolis, Indiana and surrounding areas Established in 2018.

Over 15 years ago, as a hospice nurse, I discovered a critical need within the hospice care landscape. It became evident that there was a gap in care options for hospice patients when their symptoms became unmanageable at home or when their caregivers required a reprieve. Although hospitals and long-term care facilities excel in their care provision, they lack the specialized training and philosophy inherent to hospice care. Together with my husband Bob, boasting over 45 years of healthcare operations and management experience, we embarked on a mission to fill this void. Our vision was to establish a haven specifically tailored to cater to the unique needs of hospice patients, irrespective of their hospice company. We envisioned a place where hospice patients could seek symptom management, respite care, or routine private-pay care in a serene and spacious environment while being attended to by specially trained hospice staff dedicated to upholding the hospice philosophy.

Recognizing Our Social Work Heroes

We want to take a moment to celebrate and recognize the incredible social workers who are the backbone of compassionate, holistic care at Life's Journey and those we get to work with in the community. The dedication and experience is what makes the quality of care our patients receive so exceptional.

The role of a social worker in hospice is vital and multifaceted, ensuring that appropriate psychosocial services are provided to patients and their families or caregivers. They are a critical part of the interdisciplinary group, helping to provide long-term stability for patients and employees.

The Essential Contribution of Our Social Workers

Social workers contribute to the mission of Hospice by performing a wide range of psychosocial services, including:
Emotional and Grief Counseling: Providing patient and family/caregiver counseling around the issues of death, dying, and grief.
Comprehensive Assessment: Assessing emotional factors related to terminal illness, psychosocial status, and the patient's response to interventions.
Resource Coordination: Providing financial and community resource referrals. This also includes providing information and assistance with Advance Directives and funeral planning.
Team Support: Assisting the physician and other interdisciplinary group members in recognizing and understanding the social or mental stress/disorder that may exacerbate symptoms related to the terminal illness.
Crisis Intervention: Providing crisis intervention services to patients and families/caregivers when required, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Social Work Appreciation Month Winners

We are thrilled to specifically recognize three exceptional members of our extended team as winners of Life’s Journey’s Social Work Appreciation Month:
Nichole from Hendricks Regional Hospital
Melinda from IU West Hospital
Anna from Paradigm Hospice and Palliative Care
We deeply appreciate Nichole, Anna, and Melinda and every social worker for everything they do for our families and patients. We simply could not do it without their dedication to service and compassionate care.

We have a couple more winners that will be recognized next week, stay tuned!

This Easter, we are reminded that even in life’s most sacred and tender moments… there is hope.

In hospice, we walk alongside souls and families during the most profound transitions — where love is deeper, time feels sacred, and every moment matters.

Easter is not just about an empty tomb…
It is about the promise that love never ends.
That even in death, there is life.
That even in sorrow, there is peace waiting to be found.

We witness this every day —
in the gentle holding of a hand,
in whispered goodbyes,
in the quiet strength of families,
and in the grace that carries each soul home.

At Life’s Journey Hospice, we believe:
✨ No one walks this path alone
✨ Every life is honored
✨ Every goodbye is wrapped in compassion
✨ And every ending holds the promise of something eternal

May this Easter bring you comfort in your grief,
peace in your heart,
and faith in the beauty of what lies beyond.

“He is not here; He has risen.” — Luke 24:6

From our hearts to yours,
Happy Easter 🕊️💛

Some of the most important moments in life…
happen quietly.

Not in a hospital room full of machines —
but in the soft space where someone is finally comfortable.

I’ve sat with patients who were in pain and afraid…
and within hours of the right hospice support, you could see their whole body relax.
Their breathing slows.
Their face softens.
Their family exhales.

This is what hospice is meant to do.

Research from the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization shows that patients receiving hospice care experience better comfort, fewer hospitalizations, and improved quality of life.
And families? They carry less fear, less stress, and more meaningful memories.

But what I see every day isn’t just data.

It’s a daughter being able to sit and hold her mom’s hand instead of managing everything alone.
It’s laughter in a room that once felt heavy.
It’s peace replacing panic.

Hospice isn’t about giving up.
It’s about choosing how we live… even at the end.

If you know someone who may be struggling with a serious illness, frequent hospital visits, or increasing discomfort…
it might be time to simply ask questions.

✨ We are here to help guide, support, and bring comfort every step of the way.

When a Spouse Passes: The Weight of Grief

At Life’s Journey Hospice, we often walk beside people experiencing one of life’s deepest losses—the death of a spouse.

When a husband or wife dies, the grief is not only for the person who is gone. It is also for the life that was shared together: the routines, the laughter, the plans that were never finished, and the quiet comfort of simply not being alone in the world.

Research in bereavement shows that losing a spouse is one of the most profound losses a person can experience. Studies even describe something called the “widowhood effect,” where the surviving partner may experience increased emotional and physical stress in the months following the loss. This reflects how deeply our lives become intertwined with those we love.

Grief may show itself in many ways—sadness, exhaustion, longing, confusion, or moments when the silence feels overwhelming.

These feelings are not weakness.
They are the echo of love.

Healing does not mean forgetting. Modern grief research tells us that many people gradually learn to carry their loved one forward through memories, traditions, and the lasting bond that love creates.

If someone you know has lost a spouse, the most meaningful thing you can offer is simply your presence. Listen. Sit with them. Speak their loved one’s name.

No one should have to walk through grief alone.

At Life’s Journey Hospice, we believe love never truly leaves us—it simply changes the way it lives in our hearts. We are honored to support families not only through end-of-life care, but through the journey of grief that follows.

Today we witnessed one of the most beautiful passings we have ever been privileged to be part of.

Her family lovingly called it “Operation Snow White.”

For days the rain had fallen without pause, but today God gave us something extraordinary — a warm 70-degree day and a break in the clouds. The patio doors were opened wide so she could feel the sunshine on her face, breathe the fresh air, and be surrounded by the beauty of creation.

Her family gathered close around her as hymns filled the room, sung by none other than Elvis. Outside on the porch, as if they too had come to bear witness, raccoons, squirrels, and birds gathered quietly near her as if they knew.

And as the final words of the hymn were sung… she took her final breath.

It was peaceful.
It was sacred.
It was unforgettable.

Later, her daughter shared something that captured the moment so perfectly. She said,

“Liam and T laid her to rest so beautifully like Snow White and exchanged her cross for a crown.” 🕊️

Moments like this are exactly why Life’s Journey was created.

Why every room was designed to open fully onto outdoor porches so someone can feel the sun on their face one more time.
Why families have private spaces large enough to gather — to hold hands, to pray, to laugh, to cry, and to love each other through life’s most sacred moments.

Our mission has always been to care for those facing life-limiting illness in a way that removes the sting of death, allowing life to be lived as fully as possible in every moment right up to the last breath.

Today reminded all of us why we do this work.

To this beautiful family — thank you. Thank you for trusting us with such a sacred chapter of your lives. Thank you for allowing us to care for someone so deeply loved. And thank you for the memories you created here that we, as caregivers, will carry with us forever.

You gave far more to us than we could ever give back.

Today was not just a goodbye.
It was a reminder that even in the final moments of life there can still be sunlight, music, love, and peace.

Thank you to the family and friends of our dear Margaret for allowing us to publically share their hospice experience at Life’s Journey! We pray it offers insight and inspiration to what hospice truly is meant to and can be for those fearful and unsure. We understand is not everyone’s choice to deal with a life limiting diagnosis this way. However, we are determined to give a positive experience tailored to each person’s wish and needs!

“Grief is love that no longer has a place to go.
Like rain resting on the petals of a flower, it lingers quietly—
not to drown the beauty, but to remind us how deeply the roots once drank.
Even in sorrow, love still glistens in the light.”~Laury Wallace

🏅✨ Celebrating the Spirit of the Olympics at Life’s Journey Hospice! ✨🏅

We may not be competing for gold medals, but we are absolutely celebrating the Olympic spirit — courage, perseverance, unity, and heart. 💛

This week at Life’s Journey Hospice, we’re embracing the excitement with festive decorations, themed treats, and plenty of cheering as we watch the events together. There’s something special about gathering in community and sharing in moments that bring the world together.

The Olympics remind us that strength looks different for everyone. Sometimes it’s running a race. Sometimes it’s simply showing up each day with grace and resilience. And here, we see that kind of strength every single day.

Join us in cheering on the athletes — and in celebrating the champions we are honored to care for. 🕊️

She thought hospice meant giving up.
She whispered, “Does this mean I’m dying… now?”
Her daughter was afraid to say the word. Afraid it meant the end. Afraid, hope was gone.
But something beautiful happened.
The pain eased.
The fear softened.
The room filled with quiet moments — stories, laughter, handholding, peace.
Days turned into meaningful time… not counted in numbers, but in memories.
Hospice is not what many believe.

MYTH: Hospice means giving up.
TRUTH: Hospice means choosing comfort, dignity, and quality of life.

MYTH: Hospice is only for the last few days.
TRUTH: Hospice is meant for months of support — the earlier, the better.

MYTH: Hospice takes away all medications and treatments.
TRUTH: Hospice continues medications and treatments that bring comfort, relieve symptoms, and support quality of life. Care does not stop — it shifts to what helps the patient feel best. Patients may also continue to receive medications and treatment for conditions not related to their hospice diagnosis, ensuring whole-person care and comfort.

MYTH: Hospice takes away hope.
TRUTH: Hospice changes hope — from cure to comfort, from fear to peace, from time to meaning.

MYTH: Hospice is about dying.
TRUTH: Hospice is about living — fully, gently, and surrounded by love.

At Life’s Journey Hospice, we witness it every day…
Fear turning into peace.
Pain turning into comfort.
Time turning into treasured moments.
Hospice is not the end of the story.
It is the chapter where love speaks the loudest. If you or a loved one has questions about hospice care, please call us today at (317) 561-6840. We are here to support and help you navigate this journey.
