Stories and myths about dragons appear across many cultures. Dragons have appeared as both benign and malevolent creatures in various different myths. While we do not know for certain where dragons originated, there are a couple theories as to why they are so important to cultures across the globe. One theory posits that dragons are a result of the human subconscious combining snakes, large cats, and birds of prey into one creature, as those 3 animals likely caused our ancient ancestors both fear and wonder. Another theory suggests that dragons were what ancient cultures believed dinosaur bones to be. Dragons may have also been used to rationalize natural disasters.
