Three weeks ago, I received a call letting me know I was selected as one of 10 individuals to be honored during Black History Month by Radio One. To be honest… I was shocked. My first response was, “Why me? Are you sure?” Because this work has never been about me. It has always been about our community.
I told them plainly and made it clear that this recognition belongs to the Black and Brown communities we serve every single day. It belongs to the people who continue to rise, heal, build, and thrive despite systems that were never designed with them in mind. It belongs to the individuals who fight to be seen, to be heard, and to live whole and sustainable lives.
Their response was simple: That is exactly why you were selected because the work has always centered community first.
I have always believed that my work and my actions will speak for who I am. Even when negativity shows up. Even when my name is spoken without life attached to it. My commitment has never shifted because I trust GOD and I trust the purpose placed over my life.
At Genesys Solutions, we built our mission, our processes, and our services around the lived experiences of my son and the needs of Black and Brown communities and not what institutions think they need but what they have told us they need.
So yes, I am grateful to be seen but more importantly, I am grateful that our community is being seen.
This honor is not mine alone. This award belongs to my son, every Black and Brown voice, every family, every story, and every life we are privileged to walk alongside.
Thank you Radio One and Melanin Magic for such a magical award❣️
