Preserve Greater Indy

Preserve Greater Indy Preserve Greater Indy (PGI) seeks to connect, engage, educate, and empower advocates of preservation throughout Central Indiana. No problem!

Preserve Greater Indy (PGI) is for young – or young-hearted – advocates for historic places. We’re part of the growing young preservationist movement across the United States, which hopes to grow a new generation of preservationists that breaks free of stereotypes in the preservation community. We’ve heart bombed, surveyed, hosted trivia nights, shared a beer at Indy’s finest historic bars, and supported service projects that revitalize historic places. We’re always looking for partners to create great programs and events that celebrate the diversity of historic places. Don’t live in Indy but still want to get involved? PGI events are held in Indianapolis and the surrounding communities. By connecting and empowering Central Indiana's preservation advocates, Preserve Greater Indy will build a vibrant and diverse community that understands, values, and applies preservation to strengthen authentic places. Preserve Greater Indy is a member of the Rust Belt Coalition of Young Preservationists. http://rustbeltcoalitionofyoungpreservationists.com/

Flat grave markers were popularized in the early twentieth century with the Memorial Park Movement, also providing a less costly option for marking the grave of a loved one. However, flat markers are particularly susceptible to machinery, fertilizers and w**d killers, and, of course, sinking. Join us at Crown Hill Cemetery on September 3rd to learn how to locate these lost monuments! https://fb.me/e/2XPjMTGGg

Tree trunk or stump gravestones saw a surge in popularity during the rural cemetery movement. Though associated with the Woodman of the World, they could have many meanings, such as symbolizing a life cut short or the brevity of life. Come check out the many intricate memorials at Crown Hill Cemetery and help PGI with a conditions inventory September 17th.

🎉🎉 It’s our birthday! 🎉🎉

Seven years ago, we launched Preserve Greater Indy. Our mission? Connect and empower advocates of preservation.

Since 2015, we have hosted The Rust Belt Coalition of Young Preservationists, created a campaign, hosted bicycle tours around Indianapolis, organized architectural scavenger hunts, promoted well-loved and time-worn buildings via “heart bombs,” conducted surveys, and hosted trivia nights.

Over the years, we’ve partnered with the Indiana Historical Society, Indiana Humanities, the Indiana Medical History Museum, RBCoYP, Indiana Landmarks, Historic Urban Neighborhoods of Indianapolis (HUNI), INHP, the Scottish Rite Cathedral, and several fantastic breweries (including Metazoa Brewing Company, Centerpoint Brewing, Taxman CityWay), and more!

Thank you for coming to events, contributing to social media campaigns, and advocating for preservation of authentic places. We cant wait for the next seven years.

Say hello to Preserve Greater Indy! We’re an inclusive group looking to connect and engage those with a passion for preservation and community revitalization in Central Indiana. Check out our 'about' section or just follow along to find out more. We think you’ll like what you see!

Congratulations to UNION STATION the 2021 Architecture Madness winner! (Our 32-"team" bracket is below.)

THANK YOU for playing along! We also want to thank the following, without whom we would've had faaaaar fewer awesome images to share: Indiana Album, Indiana Historical Society, IndyStar, Indiana State Library, Historic Indianapolis, Indianapolis Public Library, City of Indianapolis Department of Metropolitan Development, the Library of Congress, Bass Photo Co., and Detroit Publishing Co.

Now that Architecture Madness has wrapped up, we have a few questions for you.

1. What was your favorite building in the tournament and why?

2. Was there any building in downtown Indy that you think we missed? (We focused on downtown this year.)

3. What other offerings would you be interested in from Preserve Greater Indy coming up?

4. What virtual and in-person interactions would you like to see this year?

D’oh! Did you know that is actually a registered trademark of the Missouri Valley Conference? (It is.) So, we at Preserve Greater Indy are taking an opportunity to say that we are in no way affiliated with the MVC and will cease infringing upon their intellectual property.

We messed up, and it is our sincere hope that our use of the aforementioned trademark in no way caused irreparable harm to MVC’s brand.

Remember to Google your ideas, friends. ARCHITECTURE Madness resumes tomorrow!
