Here’s our story...what’s yours?

“Growing up, I wanted to be a doctor. My family is in medicine, and I was always intrigued by the concepts of illness/injury prevention and, later, biomechanics and surgical concepts in orthopedic patients.

In my late teens, I suffered a tremendous loss when my aunt passed away from cancer at a young age. Multiple people in my family had been diagnosed with the disease, but this death hit the hardest. A few days after her passing, my brother was deployed to Iraq. Upon his return, his re-entry into civilian life was difficult. He's one tough cookie, but the trauma of the war and subsequent PTSD was life-altering.

These two incidents forever changed my "why" to get into medicine. Finding my purpose shaped what I wanted to do, but the field of nutrigenomics was just being discovered.

In 2010, I read a study published by physicians at the University of Minnesota. They discovered that PTSD reflected physical symptoms on a brain scan, allowing diseased areas of the brain to be mapped for treatment. Later, other studies published a link between using telehealth to reduce the social stigma in veterans with PTSD. Further, separate studies cited a direct correlation to using nutrition and nutrigenomics to treat depression in affected individuals. Understanding the impact, and utilizing my background in biomechanics and neuroendocrine adaptation from both classroom and applied learning, I started to brainstorm!
