5 THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT SEASONAL DEPRESSION
1. Although our metabolism increases in the winter time, weight gain is a "cultural phenomenon" that predominantly impacts the western hemisphere due to the holiday tradition of over consuming unhealthy food and drinks.
2. Considering our bodies slow down digestion during the winter months, over consumption of unhealthy foods contribute to dysbiosis in the gut's microbiome which can create challenges with the absorption and distribution of vital nutrients needed to keep your body functioning at homeostasis. If you're eating a lot of unhealthy foods your body will lack the proper vitamins and amino acids necessary to metabolize into chemical hormones required for optimal brain health.
3. Due to a lack of sunlight, the body releases more melatonin which leads to inactivity and less exercise.
4. Statistically we drink less water during the winter so many are dehydrated and don't know it.
5. You can stop seasonal depression by changing your nutritional guidelines and eating healthier. Those that suffer from depression often share the common deficiencies of dopamine and serotonin which can be attained through food in the forms that contain L-tyrosine (which metabolizes into dopamine) and L-tryptophan (which metabolizes into serotonin).
