It is cold & flu season🤒🤧 So if you’ve been feeling a little more 🥴 than usual, Near West Free Clinic is here to help! We are open Saturdays from 10am - 2pm. No insurance or legal identification required! All our services are completely ✨FREE✨

¿Habla español? No problemo, hay intérpretes en la clínica cada fin de semana para ayudarle.

We also have social workers every 1st weekend of the month, mental health professionals every 2nd weekend of the month, and athletic trainers every 3rd weekend of the month to help with any concerns you may be having with your mental and/or physical health! We are happy to schedule you for a future appointment as well.

In honor of ✨World Smile Day✨ today, let’s talk about the importance of dental decay prevention so we can keep our smiles beautiful & healthy!

🦷🪥Practice good oral hygiene by brushing your teeth with fluoride toothpaste twice a day for 2 minutes

🦷🪥 Floss daily between the teeth to help remove dental plaque

🦷🪥 Visit your dentist at least once a year, even if you have no natural teeth or have dentures

Marian University’s medical students are hosting a FREE blood pressure screening event for the community on September 3rd from 5pm-7pm! ♥️🩺

❣️Why is checking your blood pressure so important?
High blood pressure (a.k.a. Hypertension) often has no symptoms. It is important to diagnose and treat high blood pressure early because chronic hypertension can lead to heart failure, stroke, renal failure, eye disorders, and many more health conditions.

❣️What is a high blood pressure?
Hypertension is defined as blood pressure over 130mmHg systolic (the pressure in your arteries when your heart beats) and 80mmHg diastolic (the pressure when your heart rests between beats).

❣️Are there any risk factors for hypertension?
Yes, risk factors include: age, obesity, excess salt or alcohol consumption, physical inactivity, diabetes, and smoking.

❣️What is the treatment for hypertension?
When it comes to treatment, the first choice is lifestyle change, which includes: a low sodium diet, exercise, and stress reduction.
There are a variety of medications used to treat hypertension as well.

Meet Alex! Alex’s says, “Growing up speaking Filipino as my native language, I knew how a language barrier could prevent people from being understood and asking for help. I became involved with the Near West Free Clinic because I wanted to help bridge the communication gap between the Spanish-speaking population we serve and the English-speaking care team.”

For our first “Meet the Board” post of 2021, we would like to introduce Ashley!

Ashley says, “NWFC combines my passion for service in the Indianapolis community with my medical education. I believe there is nothing more important than providing quality healthcare to all members of our community and am proud of the work the clinic continues to do to promote the health and well-being of those on the west side and beyond.”
