🌱 Histoplasma: Don’t Overlook This “Stealth” Fungus

Histoplasmosis often hides behind nonspecific signs like weight loss, fever, or cough. That’s why suspicion plus strategic testing are critical for diagnosis. At MiraVista, we offer:

✔️ Sensitive antigen assays using urine and serum
✔️ Complementary antibody panels to catch tough cases
✔️ Post-treatment monitoring to guide therapy adjustments

📍 Remember: If a patient has traveled through river valleys or soils with bird/bat droppings, Histoplasma should be on your radar especially when clinical signs are vague or chronic.

📍 Geographic Panel Tests — Smarter Fungal Screen Based on Region

When a patient’s location influences the likely fungal suspects, generic panels just won’t cut it. That’s where MiraVista’s Geographic Panel Tests shine—customized antigen + antibody assays tailored to your patient’s species and regional exposure risks.

Why use geographic panels?

✔️ Targeted testing reduces “noise” from irrelevant fungi
✔️ High sensitivity in the areas that matter
✔️ Small sample volumes and fast turnaround
✔️ Helps you prioritize differential diagnoses with confidence

🧬 Spotlight on Cryptococcosis in Pets
At MiraVista Veterinary Diagnostics, we’re raising awareness of Cryptococcosis — a fungal infection caused by Cryptococcus neoformans & Cryptococcus gattii that can affect cats and dogs through inhalation of spores found in soil, bird droppings or decaying vegetation.

Common signs include nasal discharge, swelling over the nose/face, skin nodules, or neurological issues such as seizures or blindness.

🔍 Early diagnosis is key: our antigen detection latex-agglutination test helps detect cryptococcal infection early and monitor treatment progress.

🔍 What If the Antigen Test Is Negative?
At MiraVista Veterinary Diagnostics, we understand that a negative antigen result doesn’t always mean “no infection.” For example, the urine antigen test for Histoplasmosis or Blastomycosis may look nearly perfect in studies, yet real-world testing shows false negatives occur in about 5-10% of cases due to factors like limited fungal burden, very early disease, or localized lesions.

🧪 Key Recommendations for When Antigen Is Negative but Suspicion Remains
- Submit both urine and serum specimens for antigen testing—urine alone may miss cases.
- If primary antigen testing is negative, proceed to secondary tests such as antibody assays, or histopathology/cytology of affected tissues.
- If symptoms started recently (< 1 month), consider sending a convalescent-phase specimen because antigen levels may rise as the infection progresses.

🐾 Serious Risk Alert for Pets: Pythiosis
At MiraVista Veterinary Diagnostics we’re raising awareness about pythiosis — a severe, often under-recognized infection caused by the water-mold pathogen Pythium insidiosum.

🔍 Why you should care
The organism thrives in warm, stagnant water or wet soils, and pets can be infected either through ingestion or via wounds. It can also represent in either: Gastrointestinal form (vomiting, weight loss, diarrhea or bloody stool, abdominal mass) or Cutaneous form (non-healing skin nodules, draining tracts, often on legs, tail, abdomen).

📌 Key Takeaway for Care Teams and Owners
If a pet has had exposure to pond/swamp/standing water and is showing persistent GI signs or unexplained skin lesions, consider the possibility of pythiosis and consult appropriate diagnostic resources.

🩺 Review of Histoplasmosis Treatment in Pets
At MiraVista Vets, our resource on treating Histoplasmosis in dogs and cats highlights key considerations for veterinary care:

• The azole antifungal Itraconazole is considered the first‐line treatment for disseminated disease in dogs and cats.
• Some evidence supports use of Fluconazole as a viable alternative, albeit with some limitations.
• Treatment is typically long-term—minimum of 4–6 months and often more, especially in severe or disseminated cases.
• Prognosis depends heavily on disease extent at diagnosis; early detection improves outcomes.
