Did you know there’s a strong link between heart health and dental health?!

Periodontal (gum) disease causes chronic inflammation, which can contribute to hearth disease by increasing the overall inflammation in the body. Inflammation is the key factor in atherosclerosis (narrowing of arteries). Also, oral infections allow bacteria to enter the bloodstream which can lead to endocarditis (infection of the heart’s inner lining) and contribute to plaque buildup in arteries.

Smoking, poor diet, and diabetes increase the risk of both gum and heart disease.

Ever wonder what those numbers mean that are called out during your cleaning? They are part of periodontal charting (perio charting), which measures the pockets between the gums, tissue, and teeth. These measurements help assess the health of your teeth and gums, specifically assessing for gum disease and other oral health issues.
Healthy pockets are 1-3 mm deep, while depths greater than 4mm may indicate gingivitis or periodontitis (gum disease). Recession is also measured to evaluate bone loss, giving your dental team a fill picture of your oral health.
