We're headed to New Orleans for AORN 2026 (April 11–14) 🎷

And what better place to talk about an AORN-published study that found 78% of healthcare workers have worn soiled X-ray protective gear...and nearly half never clean them at all.

If you're going to be there, come talk to us at booth #442!

We can provide free swab kits to test your garments, answer questions about lead apron cleaning protocols, and help you launch a cleaning program within your department.

Wiping down your lead apron ≠ cleaning your lead apron.

Think about it this way:

You wouldn't just wipe down your sweaty gym clothes with a surface wipe and call them clean.

X-ray garments are no different. They're worn for hours, touched constantly, and exposed to the same environment as everything else in your facility.

Wipes clean what you can see...
We clean what you can't.

Hospital leaders are taking a closer look at how lead aprons impact infection prevention, especially as surgical site infections continue to be a major focus across healthcare.

RCS helps facilities address the challenge with a comprehensive approach that includes deep cleaning, disinfection, repairs, and annual X-ray integrity checks, all tracked in RadComply® for compliance and audit readiness.

It is not just about maintaining equipment. It is about reducing infection risk, extending the life of your investment, and protecting both patients and staff.

Surgical site infections (SSIs) are something every healthcare team works hard to prevent.

Bill Schmelzer’s story highlights an often-overlooked part of that effort, the equipment we use every day, including lead.

Making sure it’s properly cleaned and maintained is one small step that can support a safer environment for both staff and patients.

Take a moment to hear Bill’s full story at the link in our bio, and consider asking your team:

“When was the last time our lead was professionally cleaned?”

Radiation protection garments don’t fail overnight...they wear out from everyday habits.

Folding, improper storage, and poor fit can lead to cracks in the core material and shorten lifespan.

The fix? Better storage, proper fit, and routine care.

Does your hospital have a clear process for cleaning lead garments?

If not, you could be overlooking a serious SSI risk.

Lead aprons are used every day, often across multiple procedures and staff, yet cleaning protocols are inconsistent or unclear in many facilities. That creates a hidden pathway for contamination.

If you’re unsure where your program stands, it may be time to take a closer look. You can request free swab kits to test your garments, get guidance on best practices for lead apron cleaning, and explore what a structured cleaning program could look like for your team.

Wearing clean lead is about more than comfort or routine, it is about safety at every level.

Lead garments can harbor bacteria and contaminants that may be transferred to patients or patient objects, increasing the risk of SSI’s.

By ensuring your lead is properly cleaned, you are taking an active step in protecting yourself, reducing contamination risks, and safeguarding your patients.

It’s one thing to realize shared lead aprons can get… a little icky.
It’s another thing to know it’s happening and still not do anything about it.

Garment hygiene is a small step that can make a real difference in reducing contamination risks tied to surgical site infections (SSIs).

If we know better, we should do better.

This quote comes directly from an AORN study on how healthcare workers use and clean shared lead aprons. And the data backs it up: 78% of respondents reported wearing soiled protective gear, while nearly half said they never spot-clean their aprons.

Shared lead garments protect us from radiation, but without consistent cleaning practices, they can also carry contamination risks for staff and patients.

What happens when the equipment meant to protect you becomes the reason you become a patient?

In this article, RCS co-founder Justin McKay shares the personal story that helped spark the creation of RCS, and why proper care of X-ray protective garments matters more than most people realize.

It’s a firsthand look at the moment that changed everything and led to our mission of keeping clinicians and patients safe. Read Justin’s story below and stay tuned for Part 2!

“Hey man, this is shameful… we need to look into how to fix this problem.” I was sitting in the pharmacy parking lot, staring at a bottle of antifungal meds, and calling my friend of 25+ years (and future co-founder), Zac Gerdts.

When Bill Schmelzer went for a hip operation in 2015, he didn’t expect to embark on a journey like this…

This story connects one patient’s lived experience with a growing concern inside surgical teams and infection control:

how shared protective garments may be contributing to the very infections hospitals are trying to prevent.

Just because it looks clean doesn’t mean it actually is. 👀

In infection control, appearances can be misleading. A garment may look spotless after cleaning, but without verification there’s no way to know if biofilm and organic residue have truly been removed.

That’s why we use ATP testing as a verification step after cleaning and before the disinfection stage. ATP (adenosine triphosphate) is found in all living cells, so measuring it allows us to quickly detect residual organic material that may still be present.

ATP testing gives us real, measurable feedback on the effectiveness of the cleaning process. Instead of relying on visual inspection or assumptions, we can confirm that garments are properly prepared for the next stage of reprocessing.

In environments where safety matters most, infection control shouldn’t rely on guessing or hoping for the best. It should be verified.
