Indy Connect Now Just what is the Indy Connect Plan?

Indy Connect Now is a community-wide campaign to create a better mass transit system in central Indiana – to grow the economy and improve access to jobs, healthcare, education and recreation. Based on decades of research by transportation experts, the proposed Indy Connect long-range transportation plan is designed to connect people to people and people to places around Central Indiana. It's intended to provide transportation options – from bus, to rapid bus, to rail, to roadways and pedestrian and bike pathways – and connect people to jobs, healthcare, education and recreation. It will increase Central Indiana's competitiveness and economic development opportunities, while improving job growth opportunities, quality of life, neighborhood revitalization, and the environment.

Rep. Randy Truitt's HB1215 would increase funding for public transit in Indiana by 45 percent over each of the next two years!

“I want to push the dialogue, push the debate, get it out in the open,” Truitt said.

A fund for public transportation could be debated before the House Ways and Means Committee after Rep. Randy Truitt filed a bill that would provide about $20 million more per year than Gov. Mike Pence proposed.

BREAKING: The Central Indiana transit bill SB 176 has passed in the Senate and now moves to the House. Below is a statement from President and CEO Michael Huber on today's proceedings:

"We are encouraged the Indiana Senate has supported our efforts to give local elected officials and citizens the opportunity to invest in the expansion of our regional transit system. As we have long said, this measure is essential for the Indianapolis region to provide access to jobs and healthcare and recruit talented workers. The Indy Chamber will remain steadfast in its mission to see this measure through the House and ultimately, to our local communities."

"While SB 176 is far from perfect, we’re encouraged the bill is moving forward and want to see it passed for one key reason. It would put Central Indiana residents in a position to get the kind of mass transit system required of a competitive and vibrant 21st century city — and to reap the benefits of that transit system."

Check out yesterday's letter in The Indianapolis Star from the Indiana Citizens' Alliance for Transit, Central Indiana Regional Transportation Authority, Hoosier Environmental Council, AARP Indiana & Metropolitan Indianapolis Board of REALTORS urging the Indiana Senate to pass today.
