🎧 New Episode of Amplified is Live!

This week, board member Britton Johnson sits down with Kelly Hultman, a speech-language pathologist and parent of a child with hearing loss, for an insightful conversation about supporting children who are deaf or hard of hearing through Listening and Spoken Language (LSL).

They break down the types of hearing loss, why early and consistent hearing aid use matters, and how Hear Indiana’s free, comprehensive speech and language evaluations help track progress and guide IEPs.

If you’re a parent, educator, or professional supporting a child with hearing loss, this episode is packed with valuable, actionable guidance.

✨ Don’t forget to rate, review, and subscribe to Amplified so you never miss a conversation that can change a child’s story.

🎧 New Episode of Amplified is Live! Please rate!

In this episode, host Britton Johnson sits down with Hear Indiana audiologist Dr. Lauren Gowdy to talk about the art and science of audiology — and why consistent hearing device use is so critical for a child’s success.

Dr. Gowdy shares practical strategies to help families build strong “eyes open, ears on” routines and explains how full-time wear (10+ hours a day!) supports a child’s cognitive, social, and emotional development.

The conversation also dives into the rise of over-the-counter hearing devices, evolving technology like AI and Bluetooth, and how Hear Indiana continues to lead the way in helping families navigate these changes.

With the help of advanced hearing technologies (i.e. digital hearing aids & cochlear implants), even profoundly deaf children can listen and speak. With appropriate intervention, these children can do everything else that a child, who was born hearing, will do.

Many people simply aren't aware of what is possible for today's deaf child with the appropriate technology and intervention, and we've made it our mission to ask people to reconsider the standards we hold for these children. We know children with hearing loss have the potential to do and be anything they choose.

Today's deaf child can play musical instruments, speak the words “I love you," sing songs with their classmates, succeed in mainstream schools, and more. They have dreams of becoming astronauts, teachers, engineers, doctors, and musicians – just like all other children. Imagine what is possible for these children if each of them had access to the technology and services that can help them achieve their dreams!
