IU Psychiatry Residency Programs

Our goal is graduate experts in Psychiatry!

The Indiana University School of Medicine Psychiatry Residency Program offers a challenging curriculum providing residents with the opportunity to develop outstanding skills and expertise while experiencing a wide variety of clinical situations and theoretical approaches. Our residents benefit from working with patients of every age and socio-economic level as part of the specialized treatment programs offered at our nationally recognized facilities. As a part of the Neuroscience Center of Excellence, our department is fully integrating direct clinical service with cliical research across neuroscience disciplines, translating medical discoveries to medical practice.

🌟 Resident Spotlight: Dr. Helen Jiang 🌟

Dr. Helen Jiang grew up in New York and completed her pediatrics training in Houston, TX. After working as a pediatrician for a few years, she decided to take a leap and join IU as a portal trainee. Since then, she’s loved meeting new people and stepping into the world of psychiatry. She describes the experience as rewarding, challenging, and—most importantly—fun.

One of her favorite memories so far has been the program’s boat trip. “There’s nothing like being out on the open lake with a great group of people and the breeze in your hair,” she says.

At home, life is lively with three kids, three dogs, and a very supportive husband. Even though things can get a little chaotic, Dr. Jiang finds a lot of beauty in the everyday moments. She’s especially excited to show her kids around Indianapolis and make new memories together.

Looking back, she admits that making a big career change was scary. “When I left my job as a pediatrician, I had no idea what to expect,” she says. “Now, I’m so glad I took that leap—I have .”

✨ Intern Spotlight: Dr. Justin Davis ✨

Born in Russia and raised in Indiana, Dr. Davis completed his undergraduate studies at Purdue University before attending medical school on IU’s Bloomington campus.

Growing up, he was a competitive gymnast and now shares his passion for the sport as a part-time coach at a local cheer gym.

Outside the hospital, you’ll likely find Dr. Davis enjoying the outdoors—whether it’s cycling, bird watching, fishing, or hiking. He also has a creative side, often knitting on the couch while watching Hallmark movies.

His clinical interests include mood disorders and interventional psychiatry.

Reflecting on residency so far, Dr. Davis shared:
“My favorite memory has been the retreat at the start of residency. From swimming and volleyball to eating chocolate and relaxing by a campfire, it was such a fun way to connect with my fellow residents!”

🌸✨Intern Spotlight: Dr. Lulu Yang✨🌸

Originally from China, she completed medical school at Southern Medical University and spent three years as a postdoctoral researcher focusing on sleep medicine and mental health before moving to Indy.

Outside of medicine, she loves traveling, hiking, mountain climbing, biking, playing badminton, cooking, shopping, and spending time with family, friends, and puppy, Yoyo. Lately, she’s been learning pickleball with friends, which has been a lot of fun!

“My favorite part of residency so far has been the incredibly supportive and thoughtful environment at IU. From co-interns and senior residents to attendings and staff, everyone has been so kind and encouraging. As someone new to Indy, I’ve never felt alone. I feel like our program not only trains us to become great psychiatrists but also really cares about our well-being.”

Meet Dr. Jason Gallo!

Originally from Wethersfield, Connecticut, Jay grew up in New England and kicked off his academic journey at UConn before making a stop in Boston. He later traded in the East Coast for some desert sunshine, heading to Arizona for medical school at the Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine.

When he’s not working, you can usually find Jay out exploring Indiana’s parks with his girlfriend and their dogs, going for a run, catching live music, or cheering on his favorite sports teams.

Some of his favorite residency memories include the annual retreat—“I had such a great time getting to know all the amazing residents.” He also highlights his inpatient psychiatry rotation at Methodist as a standout experience: “I’ve learned so much and seen a wide variety of psychopathology.”

We’re lucky to have Jay bringing his energy, curiosity, and East Coast cool to the team!

🌟 Intern Spotlight: Dr. Sarah McNitt 🌟

Meet Sarah! Though her family moved around quite a bit growing up, she considers the Midwest home. Especially Michigan, where she completed the DO-PhD program at Michigan State University. Her PhD research focused on malaria immunology, a passion that took her across the globe from Minnesota to Malawi.

Outside of medicine, Sarah has an adventurous side! She enjoys Muay Thai, creating art (especially acrylic pours), and fun fact she might just be a ninja. 😉

Her favorite residency memory actually happened before residency officially began: a co-resident invited the group to a barbecue and pool party. That day left her feeling a deep sense of belonging and friendship, and since then she’s found both a community and a city where she feels at home. 💛

✨ Intern Spotlight: Dr. Jayla Ruth ✨

Meet Dr. Jayla Ruth, one of our amazing residents!

Dr. Ruth is from Fishers, IN, and studied Neuroscience and Global Health Promotion at IU Bloomington. She’s passionate about community psychiatry, local outreach, and substance use disorders, and hopes to make a real difference in the lives of those she serves.

Outside of residency, you’ll find her at group fitness classes, volunteering at church, exploring new coffee shops and public libraries, and spending quality time with her husband.

Her favorite part of residency so far?
Her first VA inpatient block, where she had an “amazing attending, senior, and co-resident who made the transition into residency such a great experience.”

We’re so glad to have Dr. Ruth on our team!

🌟 Intern Spotlight: Dr. Nick Reed 🌟

Meet Nick! He’s originally from St. Louis, MO, and came to Indy by way of sunny Sarasota, FL. He went to Florida State University College of Medicine and is interested in adult inpatient psychiatry and interventional psychiatry.

Outside of medicine, Nick has a big love for music—he plays guitar whenever he can. He also enjoys exercising, going on walks, traveling, watching Indy sports, and spending time with dogs!

“My favorite memory from residency so far has been rotating on inpatient psych at Eskenazi Hospital. I got to know some of my co-residents and faculty there and learned a lot while working with the patients. It was a great experience!”

We’re so glad to have Nick on the team!

✨ Meet Dr. Yumna Magzoub! ✨

Originally from Sudan, Dr. Magzoub studied medicine at the University of Khartoum before spending a year in Boston and then making her way to Indy. She’s fast-tracking into Child & Adolescent Psychiatry and is especially passionate about refugee mental health and trauma-informed care.

Outside of medicine, you’ll probably find her watching reality TV, at the movies, or enjoying some time reading and writing.

Her favorite residency memory? That very first day meeting all the residents, faculty, and staff and feeling so blessed to be part of such an amazing group of people!

Next up in our PGY-1 class is Dr. Abby Gichaba! Born in Kenya and raised in Avon, IN, she’s a proud Boilermaker (Biology + Psych minor) and IU School of Medicine grad.

She’s passionate about addiction psychiatry, interventional psychiatry, and improving mental health care in culturally diverse communities.

When she’s not in the hospital, you’ll find her singing, puzzling, or planning her next trip.

“My favorite memories so far have been finally finishing onboarding and meeting all the amazing residents, faculty, and staff!”
