Luther Clayton Mitchell

Luther Clayton Mitchell was born on January 31, 1954, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Clarice Wright. He was raised in Detroit, Michigan, and he received his foundational education at Southeastern High School, graduating with the Class of 1972. Seeking to further his horizons, Luther attended Wayne State University. Even in those early years, it was clear that a deep internal compass guided him; he felt called toward a life of profound purpose and meaning, a calling that would shape the decades to follow. Luther transitioned to a new chapter of his life by moving to Indianapolis, Indiana. In 1981, while out dancing, he asked Pamela Wadsworth to dance. They eventually married and raised their three amazing children, Matthew, Katherine, and Rita. To provide for his family, Luther established himself professionally as an industrial worker, known for his dedication and work ethic. Later in life, he met his second wife, Crystal Anderson, in Indianapolis, IN. The happy couple soon wed and have spent more than 16 years together. Two peas in a pod….the two were more than just a blushing couple, but best friends. Luther’s strength was drawn from his unwavering walk with the Lord. He navigated the complexities of life and health challenges with a rare grace, firmly believing that God held the blueprint for his journey. When faced with the inevitable obstacles and vicissitudes of life, Luther did not waver. Instead, he leaned into his faith, trusting completely in the divine plan. His life served as a living example of the peace that comes from placing one's life in God’s hands. To know Luther was to know his profound love for music. He possessed a particular affinity for the soulful rhythms of Jazz and R&B, and his knowledge was legendary—he could identify a tune or an artist within the first few notes. This passion culminated in a magnificent collection of music, including over 1,000 vinyl records, and a vast library of CDs and tapes. To Luther, music was more than a hobby; it was the soundtrack to a life well-lived. However, Luther’s true work was found in his service to others. A man of immense compassion, he spent ten years as a devoted volunteer with Hope 4 2morrow. Through this community outreach organization, he became a pillar of support for the less fortunate, tirelessly distributing food and clothing to those in need. His decade of service stood as a testament to his belief in the inherent dignity of every person. In Luther’s last months, he increased his impact on the world and began donating to the ASPCA to support lifesaving animal rescue and rehabilitation efforts. Notably, Luther’s greatest legacy is not found in what he owned, but in the lives he influenced. While he was a foundational role model for his children, his impact extended deeply to his grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many of his children’s friends as well. He was a man of principle who taught the younger generation the value of integrity, the necessity of taking responsibility for one's actions, and the importance of celebrating every victory over adversity. Luther was a man defined by his vibrant spirit and infectious positivity, which touched everyone he met. His melody lives on in the hearts of all who loved him. He leaves behind a family strengthened by his guidance and a community made better by his presence. Luther Clayton Mitchell traded time for eternity on February 2, 2026. He leaves to cherish his memory and legacy a very loving and devoted wife: Crystal Mitchell; caring son: Matthew (Jared) Clemmons-Mitchell, faithful daughters; Katherine Adamou, Rita (Aaron) Maxey, cherished grandchildren: Naomi, Aissatou, and Abdul Adamou; Loving Mother: Clarice Thomas, Dear Brother: Marcus Thomas, Beloved Sisters: Nina Wheeler, Cheryl Thomas, and a host of loving nephews, nieces, relatives, and friends.

THE RIDE OF A LIFETIME

The Life Journey of Lauman "Lep" Smith

A FOUNDATION IN INDY

Lauman Smith, affectionately known as "Lep," began his journey on November 8, 1960, in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was the fourth child born to the union of George P. and Lizzie Smith. Lep was a product of the Indianapolis Public School system, attending IPS #38 and later Arsenal Technical High School, where his natural talent for working with his hands first began to shine. He was a true craftsman — the kind who could turn popsicle sticks into artwork, complete with secret compartments where he could hide his cash. His ability to hide things in plain sight was so clever that it would make someone stop and say, "I should do that."

Lep was also known to have a yard full of "stuff." If he saw something on the side of the road and thought it could be of use, best believe it was ending up at his house. He even managed to lay three carpets on top of each other — and if you asked him why, he’d tell you with a straight face he was trying to level the house out.

THE HANDS OF A MASTER

Lep was a man who understood the language of engines and steel. His lifelong career in mechanics and labor was a testament to his skill. He served as a janitor at Major Tool and Machine, a mechanic at Dan Young Chevrolet, and spent six years as a sandblaster at KDC Truck & Trailer Repair Inc. Beyond his formal jobs, Lep’s true passion was found in the garage. He had a deep love for Harley-Davidsons and classic cars — where others saw rust, Lep saw a vision.

He was famous for taking things apart just to see how they worked — but the real "Lep Experience" happened when he gave the car back. He was known for returning a vehicle without all its original pieces, having decided they were unnecessary. If you questioned him about the leftover parts, he’d simply tell you with total confidence: "You don’t need it!" And he never did put them back.

THE MAYOR OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Lep didn’t just live in his neighborhood; he ruled it. As the self-proclaimed "King and Mayor," he was famous for creating unusual rules that perfectly suited whatever circumstance he was in. Take his house, for example — he named it "Club 1836." It didn’t cost a thing to get in, but you had to pay to get out. He was a man of quick wit and creative "Lep-isms," always ready with a comeback. He’d start telling you a story, and right in the middle of it — instead of finishing — he’d just say, "and dee dee dee," and keep moving. The funny part? Everyone still knew exactly what he meant. Despite his stubborn ways, Lep had a heart for the people. He was the type of man who would give his last and try to figure out how he was going to get it back later.

FAMILY & "DRESS UP"

Life with Lep was never dull. You might find him "playing dress-up," putting on a full, sharp outfit just to walk to the corner. Or you might hear the familiar sound of him and his sister, Hortensia, fussing at each other from their front porches — living right across the street from one another. He’d yell, "You down here meddling in my business!" and she’d fire right back, "I was on this corner first!" That was their love language.

And if family or friends made a pit stop through the neighborhood, they’d better hope Lep was in the mood for company. If he wasn’t — and you caught him on that couch rubbing his toes together, tired from the day — he wasn’t getting up. You’d knock on the door and all you’d hear was a loud "WHATTTT!" from the other side. That was his way of saying, "don’t bother."

THE FINAL LAP

After a long and courageous battle with illness, Lep departed this earthly life on February 9, 2026. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Lizzie Smith; three sisters, Linda Mack, Abigail Smith, and Hortensia Smith; and his grandson, Andre Smith.

HIS LEGACY LIVES ON

He leaves to cherish his memory: his children, Tawanna Smith, Rochelle Smith, Jasmine Johnson, Lakeisha Cross, and Asia Dozier; grandsons, Isaac and Aaryk; granddaughters, Jadess Evans, Royal Aramade, and Korea Jefferson; his only brother, Hyman (Ann) Smith; and a host of family and friends who will miss his "Mayor" rules and his one-of-a-kind talk.

THE PIT CREW

His daughter, Lakeisha, wishes to extend a special thanks to those who stood beside him through the hard times of his four-year journey, including friends Lamont Osborn Sr., Chestina Harris, Brandon, and Danielle Turner.

Nadine Zapata Bobbitt

Nadine Zapata Bobbitt was born on August 23, 1957 in Dolores Abra, Philippines. She was the first of five children born to Cresencio and Elisa Negranza. Nadine became a citizen of the United States in 1965 at 8 years old.

Her father was a CPO in the U.S. Navy, so Nadine and her family moved around to several places from San Diego, CA to Japan. Nadine completed her high school education at the Nile C. Kinnick High School in 1976 in Yokosuka, Japan. She enjoyed sports like softball, basketball, and football, but also loved home economics like sewing and cooking. Nadine was a fierce friend and a loving and protective sister. It was also in Japan that Nadine met Willie Bobbitt in 1975. They began dating in March of 1976 and joined in holy matrimony on October 8, 1976. They were married for 49 years, 4 months, and 2 days –a total of 18,022 days. And to this union, four beautiful daughters were born.

While attending Trinity CME Church for many years prior, Willie, Nadine, and their children officially joined the Trinity CME Church in 1995, where Nadine remained an active member and Stewardess until her passing.

Nadine was employed by ESC and Pike Township for almost 30 years after retiring in May of 2024. Nadine LOVED her job, and said that “the best part of my job was caring for the children; I loved the children like they were my own.” She said that her best achievements were when children came back to see her when they were in high school, college, adults, and married to remind her that she was their favorite caregiver and to thank her. “I always told them to be good, stay focused, and not let anyone discourage them and their future goals.”

She loved a challenge and was very competitive in games and sports. She was even competitive with cooking, often saying, “I can make that better.” She could make you laugh with just her laugh alone. If you were blessed enough to know her, then you knew she loved to cook and share her food with her friends and family. She was the best listener and observer which made her the best at guessing “who dunnit” before the end of a mystery/thriller. To know Nadine was not just to know that she was kind and loving but to FEEL it from her.

On Tuesday, February 10, 2026, Nadine went to receive her promise and greeted her Savior at the age of 68, surrounded by her family after a three-year long battle with cancer. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Tawnie Marie. Nadine leaves to cherish her memory her loving husband, Willie Bobbitt; daughters, Elisa Couch (Shawn), Angela Ruiz (Miguel), and Lauren Duff (Chauncey); granddaughters, Kailey Crose and Aria Duff; her parents, Cresencio and Elisa Negranza; siblings, Cris Negranza (Donna), Ted Negranza (Carol), Arnel Negranza, and Karen Elliott (Tim); a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
