Larry Steven Nelson Sr.

Larry Steven Nelson Sr. was born on January 8, 1949, and is the son of the late Charles Sr. and Juanita Nelson, and brother of the late Charles Jr.

Larry passed away on December 18, 2025, surrounded by love and legacy, leaving behind a life defined by service, mentorship, faith, and deep devotion to family.

Larry received his early education at St. Rita’s Catholic School, where he served as a student and an altar boy under the guidance of Father Bernard Strange.

Larry was devoted to his Catholic faith from an early age and into adulthood. He always demonstrated a strong sense of responsibility and commitment to helping others—values that would guide his life’s work. One of his favorite phrases was “light a candle”, which referenced prayer.

Larry built a distinguished career in public service and community advocacy. He served as Nutrition Director for CICOA, overseeing nutrition programs across many Indiana counties and ensuring access to food for countless families. He worked closely with Mayor Hudnut in the 80’s and played a key role in launching the Loaves Program, which provided vital food assistance to low-income families. His dedication to the community later earned him recognition as WIBC Man of the Year.

Larry was deeply engaged in civic life and politics from a very early age. During the 1980s, he ran for the office of Precinct Committeeman, including campaigns against prominent figures such as Julia Carson. His passion for leadership extended to youth mentorship, where he co-founded alongside with his longtime friend William Guynn, the Boy Scouts of America Troop 113 based out of St. Andrew’s Catholic School mentoring many young men and shaping future leaders.

Many will also fondly remember Larry from his long-time 3rd shift night job as a clerk at the Shell gas station near 71st Street and Binford Boulevard during the 1990s—a place where he became a familiar and trusted face in the community.

Larry attended Indiana State University, where he took great pride in his affiliation with Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. He later married Deborah Wood, whom he met at ISU. Their marriage lasted from 1972 to 1990, and together they raised four children.

His professional life also included work with the Indiana State Department of Health from which he retired as a Director of the Women and Children’s Division. Larry actively participated in Black Expo initiatives and traveled to college campuses to support outreach and education. In addition, Larry was a licensed real estate broker in his spare time. Even in retirement, he continued to serve, working part-time as a security guard at the Chamber of Commerce building in downtown Indianapolis.

Larry was a devoted grandfather who loved his children and grandchildren dearly. He always looked forward to time spent with them. He also cherished sharing life with his best friend and partner, Sandy Brown, for over 30 years. Together they laughed, cried, traveled, and enjoyed countless meals, especially at Bob Evans, Popeyes, and MCL which were his favorite spots.

If you knew Larry, you would know his passions: Black art, fishing, traveling, music, and watching sports live or on television. He lived fully, loved deeply, and gave generously.

Larry Steven Nelson Sr. leaves behind his four children: Larrisse, Larry Jr., Kevin, and Kimberly; and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, extended family, and friends. He especially loved his Aunt Wanda “ReeRee” Smith along with his sister, Sharon Hopkins.

Our community and lives will forever be touched by his life, service, and spirit.
