Marvin J.W. Underwood, Sr.
Marvin, affectionately known as “Jelly,” was a man of rhythm, movement, knowledge, and heart. From an early age, he was known for his smooth breakdancing—pop-locking, moonwalking, and commanding the stage as a teenager, where he proudly won talent shows with effortless style and charisma.Music was always part of Marvin’s soul. He loved beatboxing outside to flowing melodies and spending late hours at home mastering the turntables, scratching vinyl records and mimicking the sounds of Run DMC. His passion for sound, movement, and creativity shaped who he was.Marvin cherished his time with his close trio—Tony, Joe, and Marvin—creating memories filled with laughter, music, and brotherhood. He enjoyed playing video games on the Atari, mastering pinball machines, and always made time to gather at the Collins house, where friendships flourished. He took pride in his appearance, especially his signature waves—brushing his hair until they were just right. During his high school years, Marvin excelled in track and field, winning first place with natural speed and little effort. He rode dirt bikes in his free time and, at just 15 years old, talked his father into fixing up his big sister’s Monte Carlo, which became his first car. He later drove a Bronco and worked at the mill while still in high school, getting an early taste of independence and responsibility.Marvin was a lifelong learner and dreamer. His vast knowledge and curiosity kept him moving forward. He was skilled in many trades—a barber, mechanic, welder, and consultant—always sharing ideas, solutions, and wisdom with those around him.Above all, Marvin was a devoted and loving father, a role he cherished deeply. He was also preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Patricia Underwood, who forever remains in his heart. Marvin took great pride in his children and worked tirelessly to support, guide, and provide for them, leaving behind a legacy of love, strength, and dedication that lives on through each of them.A memory his children were especially fond of was fishing with him—whether on land or out on the Great Lakes in his boat. Fishing was one of Marvin’s greatest passions, and there was nothing he enjoyed more than catching fish and sharing a meal prepared from his own hands and harvest. In his leisure time, Marvin enjoyed cooking and eating clean, fishing, collecting coins and precious gems, painting, and spending time outdoors in nature. He loved hosting barbecues and fish fries, opening his home to family and friends alike. He treasured music, meaningful conversations, deep relationships, relaxation, and self-expression.Marvin had a sharp sense of fashion, loved bold colors, dressed well to leave a lasting impression, and always made sure he smelled good.
