You can do everything right at the pool — shower, use protective gear, avoid getting water in your ear canal — and still come out with burning eyes and a sore throat afterward. These could be signs of a chlorine illness.

While chlorine helps keep pool water safe from germs, at high levels it can also irritate your system. Mild irritation fades within a few hours, but more severe exposure can leave you with coughing fits or shortness of breath that doesn’t go away.

Emerald Coast Urgent Care can help you find the cause of your discomfort and treat your symptoms, so you recover faster. Knowing when it’s just normal post-swim irritation and when to get checked can protect your health and keep you enjoying the water.

From chlorine irritation to swimmer’s ear, learn the warning signs of swimming-related sicknesses and how Emerald Coast Urgent Care helps you recover quickly.

At Emerald Coast Urgent Care, we're proud to share that we have been invited to receive a Lifesaving Coin from the Inlet Beach Fire Station and were touched by the following letter we received from the Public Information Officer at the South Walton Fire District.

"It's my understanding that the quick actions and effective CPR provided by a few of your staff members contributed to the positive outcome of a patient who went into cardiac arrest in the lobby of Emerald Coast Urgent Care earlier this year. The date of the event was May 6, 2025.

This is an especially unique call for our District because it appears to be the first cardiac arrest "save" Engine 6 has responded to since it went into service a few weeks before the call.

We typically give a lifesaving coin to the individuals who were actively involved in patient care/medical interventions, at times this can involve bystanders or even more formally trained members of the community like the team at Emerald Coast Urgent Care."
