It’s called heavy work! And it’s free! (As long as you live in the Midwest like me and my family and own a sled. If you live in a warmer climate, a weighted wagon or stroller can also work great!) Add in a sibling and it’s a solid win-win to get the nervous wiggles out.

No meds. No supplements or herbs for this intervention. No giant creative project… just natural body movement with added weight.

Need more help with a child nervous about the transition back to school, homeschool coop, or planned activities this week? Reach out! I’d love to help.

What do you think matters MOST to your five-year-old daughter? Do you think it’s fancy toys, treats, or extra screen time?

The answer: taking a few minutes to sew the arm back on of her beloved “Foxy” she’s slept with every night since she was itty bitty. It’s showing her you know how to care for her heart and her favorite stuffy. It’s demonstrating you can a do a skill she didn’t know you could (yes, I can sew, and also don’t have time/make time for that in this motherhood season).

Kids care more about the genuine. The real life; taking care of their favorites, than about the fancy.

Pause. Reflect. What would fill your child’s cup today? I promise you, it doesn’t have to be expensive, take a long time, or be anything fancy.

Advice from a mom to two, and a provider who works with kids every day.

Here’s when I might recommend a multivitamin:
-poor diet
-picky eating
-certain behaviors, conditions, symptoms

Here’s where I might say no to a multivitamin:
-eats a diet that is varied, minimal processed food
-family eats mostly real, whole foods focusing on veggies and fruit (fiber!), protein, healthy fats, hydration
-child gets time outside
-child gets adequate sleep

If I were to recommend a brand, I choose products off Fullscript where third party testing has been completed, the B vitamins are in bioavailable forms (including NO folic acid), and the ingredients are clean. I prefer a chewable over a gummy if a child cannot swallow pills yet as there is less risk for cavities.

Want to save your family some $$? You might just be able to pause that multivitamin and put that $ into nutrient dense food sources which are often more affordable and better absorbed in the body.

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, I want to share with you that it IS possible to educate young children on the benefits of quality food, and specifically food that fuels their bodies and feels best to their brains. Every child and every family is different. What’s important is figuring out what your child and family need and working together as a team to support one another.

I often get asked in my clinic how to support kids who are needing to limit certain foods based on food intolerance testing and/or food allergies. It comes down to having someone on the child’s team – a parent or a sibling who is willing to eat the same food if the child is really struggling, teaching about the food- the WHY behind eating the way they need to, and offering alternatives so they don’t feel like they’re missing out.

Speaking as a mom of two children, my kids understand how they need to eat to feel their best. We never have any issues when going to family outings/gatherings. They know how they feel and they know what they need to feel their best. The rest of the food- they simply ignore it and focus on the time with their family.

I took my kids to the park yesterday and the beach brought along a bouncy ball that they got free from a carnival. But you can get a giant pack of bouncy balls from your local store, Amazon, etc., for a fairly decent price. Give each child a bouncy ball and watch the magic happen! Creative imaginations. Body movement. Fresh air. Time together.

Did you know that one of the things I keep close by to the kitchen is a bottle of lavender essential oil? Lavender essential oil is awesome for healing a first-degree burn. As soon as you get that burn from the kitchen pan, curling, iron, etc., take action!

Put 1 drop of lavender essential oil (make sure it has the Latin name on the bottle: lavendula angustifolia on it) and feel instant relief!

True story of my day: burned my left thumb this morning and was able to go on and have an awesome pain-free, blister-free day!

Did you know there are two parts to the nervous system? Parasympathetic and sympathetic.

Every child is different. Some need more book time before bed, some need balance work such as this real time example (ignoring the clutter of a normal house with two kids ages 5 and under), the list goes on and on. The most important thing is figuring out what your child needs before bedtime to help provide some sensory input and support the parasympathetic nervous system (rest, digest, and heal part of our autonomic nervous system).

It doesn’t have to be fancy. It can be a $20 balance kit from target- and no, I do not love plastic, but I do love toys that are compactible and can be easily stored back in the box and put under a bed or in the closet so they can be taken back out and become “new” again.

Over here in the Four Pillars household, we aim to be as low-tox as possible, but also recognize sometimes you have to try toys that most families can afford and find the goodness in each thing that provides frankly two kids sleeping soundly through the night!

Here’s to more nights of nervous system balance, and supporting sound rest, digest, and heal state.

Here’s the deal: building a business with my husband, while simultaneously raising our little humans, has taught me so much more about my strengths and the strengths my husband has. Together we balance each other out. It’s not for everyone, but it is for us! We strive to build each other up and recognize what we each bring to the table.

Here’s to my right-hand man, my man that runs my marketing, books, website, and much more. Also the man who isn’t on IG and might not even see this.

The ‘M’ technique is a specific form of gentle touch therapy that was introduced by Jane Buckle, Ph.D., RN, when she taught at the University of Minnesota School of Nursing. The technique uses a structured sequence with a pattern set of three. I have seen amazing results in decreasing patient symptoms, such as pain and anxiety when I worked at a local children’s hospital and in my private practice.

Most providers are not trained in gentle touch therapy and frankly I have seen providers almost scared to provide physical contact with their patients. I could go on and on about the benefits of properly trained physical touch, and how it can dramatically improve the outcome for a patient, pending the patient approves something such as this type of therapy (as we’re all different in our likes/dislikes).

The point of this post is to highlight two things.
1) incorporating integrative modalities into your care practice can dramatically improve outcomes for your patients while delivering low cost, low risk, and non-invasive approaches

2) to thank the team I volunteered with yesterday where I was able to work alongside old colleagues, providing hands-on modalities for the wonderful women of the Trust

Some of us need sensory input that promotes calming and organizes our brain. While some of us need sensory input that provides stimulation and alerting responses. If you find that your child, or maybe you as the adult, are craving some sensory input, try walking through the crunchy fall leaves and notice how your mood changes and your energy shifts.
