Colorectal cancer leads to more deaths than any other cancer in the United States. According to the American Cancer Society, a vast majority of colorectal cancer deaths can be prevented—yet many people are not taking advantage of screening options.

“Colorectal cancer is often called a silent cancer because it rarely presents with symptoms,” says Dr. Megan Morriss, a general surgeon at Allen County Regional Hospital and Anderson County Hospital. “If you’re 45 or older or have any family history of polyps or colon cancer, don’t take your chances. Just get screened.”

A colonoscopy is the most common and effective screening tool for colon cancer. Read more from Dr. Morriss about colonoscopies and colorectal cancer risks: https://heyor.ca/qyDU10

Today, on National Doctors’ Day, we honor the hands that heal, the hearts that carry our community’s health, and the minds that never stop seeking better medicine. Your impact is felt far beyond our hospital walls—in the hope you restore, the lives you save, and the loved ones who return to their families.

Our promise is kept in the daily commitment of our doctors. It is a calling defined by quiet, personal sacrifice: the missed dinners, the long nights at the bedside, and a responsibility that doesn’t end when the shift does. We recognize the physicians who show up, who become the steady anchor a family needs, and who offer a reassuring presence that says: “We are in this together.”

To our physician partners: Thank you for the expertise you bring, the sacrifices you make, and the humanity you offer every person in your care.

𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝘂𝘀 𝘀𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗸𝘀. We invite you to take a moment to thank a doctor in the comments and let them know the difference they have made in your life.

Congratulations to Brandi, Allen County Regional Hospital's 2025 Employee of the Year! Brandi works as a registered nurse at Allen County Regional Hospital–Iola Clinic and received multiple nominations from her team.

Over the past two years, Brandi has learned all aspects of the clinic and is always willing to step in and help when another team member is out for the day or just needs an extra hand. Patients are always thankful for her ability to solve problems and quick follow through.

“Brandi can juggle multiple tasks throughout the day and still have a smile on her face,” one nomination reads. “She has received lots of praise from the local pharmacy and patients who really enjoy her positive attitude and willingness to help others.”

Like many other nurses, Brandi's passion for patient care began in her youth when she stepped up to support loved ones with medical needs. She remembers those early experiences, and to this day, her enthusiasm for her work and caring for others is unwavering.

"Transitioning to this clinic role has been transformative," says Brandi. "The environment here feels distinct; I sense that my efforts, no matter how small, genuinely impact our patients' lives, and I am fully committed to making sure patients have a great experience at our clinic. It's important that our patients trust and know they can rely on us to provide the best care."

Congratulations, Brandi! Thank you for going above and beyond and for helping make Allen County Regional Hospital's Iola Clinic an extraordinary place for patients, providers, and staff. 💙

For decades, heart disease was widely viewed as a man’s disease. That misconception lingered until the early 2000s, when research found that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined.

Dr. Tracy Stevens, a cardiologist and medical director at Saint Luke's Muriel I. Kauffman Women's Heart Center, recently sat down with the Iola Register to share heart disease risk factors and awareness.

“We often make the mistake of thinking that if we feel well, our blood pressure must be fine,” Stevens said. “It is the silent killer, and monitoring it is the single most important action you can take to protect your heart. Heart disease does not discriminate—it can affect all women.”

Allen County Regional Hospital–Iola Clinic's Margaret Lesher, FNP-C, retired last week after more than 30 years of service to Allen County.

Margaret began working at Allen County Hospital in the late-1980s as a nurse and house supervisor in the Medical-Surgical and Emergency Departments. Margaret also taught nursing classes at an area community college—but she wanted more.

"I needed a master's degree to continue, and it was time to decide the direction I wanted to go," Margaret says. "I enjoyed teaching, but wanted to be more hands-on and take care of people. The family nurse practitioner program was a brand-new thing at that time, and family practice felt like just the challenge I was looking for."

In the 1990s, she went back to school and was in the second class to complete the new master's level family nurse practitioner program at the University of Kansas Medical Center.

"The whole thing just clicked for me, and I wouldn't have changed a thing," Margaret says.

Margaret returned to Iola in 1998 and began caring for patients alongside Drs. Hull, Stone, and Walter in the hospital's primary care clinic, the very first family nurse practitioner to practice in the area.

"I feel like I grew up here," Margaret says. "I'm going to really miss everyone at the hospital and clinic, and all my wonderful patients."

Margaret has big plans for her retirement, including trips to New York City to take in some Broadway shows and to Las Vegas for a niece's graduation, but she mostly looks forward to her weekly Canasta games and enjoying frequent lunches with her many dear friends.

We'd like to sincerely thank Margaret, our pioneering nurse practitioner, for three decades of dedicated service caring for our patients and for inspiring so many other young nurses to follow their dreams. 💙
