I have been enjoying working for a couple of clients this summer. I must say that reading birth, death, and marriage records in German and Dutch from Slovenia and the Netherlands has sometimes been a challenge. Anyone want to take a chance on the name found in the top picture? I have no idea...

Finished up on a little project last week for a new client. I helped the client get started on finding the appropriate documents and records she would need to apply for Italian Dual Citizenship.

While she is going to seek more advanced help with the records from Italy, I was able to help her know what was available and find the appropriate places to get the certified records.

Jure Sanguinis translates to "by law of the bloodline" and is an Italian law that allows someone to obtain Italian citizenship by descent.

"He was employed by his cousins the Brougham Bros..." These nine words in the obituary of my GGG Uncle were just the clue I need to connect my GGGG grandmother and her siblings. With the Brougham name, I was able to find a family of Broughams that happened to be in the railroad grading business. It turns out this family was living next door to my GGGG grandmother and her family on the 1850 census in Illinois (in fact, three siblings were living next door to each other on that census - A Pat Kavanaugh, an Ellen Broham, and my GGGG mother Mary Cashman - all Kavanaughs from Ireland! This connection could lead me back to Ireland and another homestead! Or at least another county to vacation to...

I completed a research project last week for a client. The client's great grandfather had this photo of his sister from Peoria, Illinois - no other information was known about her besides her maiden name. I used the photo, marriage records, census data, and information about photographers in Peoria to identify her. As a bonus, her marriage record listed her parents (previously unknown ancestors to my client). The key was matching the children in the photo with the census data. Notice that the two younger children appear to be twins or at least close in age with an older sister. These children matched census data and the photographer’s era was correct for the age of the children as well. Sometimes it is the little details that help solidify a connection.
