Fourth-year medical student Pavane Gorrepati has written a children's book and started her own organization to educate school-age kids about the stigma associated with skin conditions. “I Am More Than My Hair” features the journey of a girl who loses her hair due to alopecia, an autoimmune disorder. Pavane worked with Nkanyezi Ferguson, MD, a dermatologic surgeon at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, to complete the book.

"Often, when kids don't understand something or don't know, it can become an opportunity to shame or ridicule others," Pavane says.
