⚠️FREE MCAT Prep Program for SHPEP Iowa Alumni⚠️

The Carver College of Medicine (CCOM) has designed a free virtual MCAT program to help our SHPEP Scholars.

Starting January 2023, this 16-week program (Jan 15-May 3rd) is designed for students who plan to take the MCAT Spring/Summer 2023. Led by current medical students from Carver College of Medicine, this program will provide you mentorship throughout your MCAT studying. Unlike most traditional MCAT courses, this program will NOT be a review of all the necessary content, nor will it guarantee a certain score. Instead, the program's components will be divided into large group and small group sessions. Weekly, large group sessions (1.5hrs/week) will focus on key test-taking strategies for the various sections of the MCAT. Small group sessions (1hr/week), led by current CCOM medical students, will be where you can review content and discuss questions. In addition to the weekly small group time, you will also have one-on-one time with your tutor (30min). This component is meant to provide you with more individualized feedback and mentorship as you are prepping for the MCAT. Course material/content will come from various third-party MCAT sources and will mostly be taught in a self-paced format.

Below are the prerequisites for the course:

2 semesters of introductory biology
2 semesters of general chemistry
2 semesters of organic chemistry
At least 1 semester of physics
At least 1 semester of psychology/sociology

By participating in this program, you are expected to attend all large-group and small-group sessions for best results. You will be permitted to miss no more than 4 large-group sessions. Failure to comply with the course attendance policy will result in consequences and may result in restricted resources.

Please complete this application by November 4th. NOTE, you will need to provide information about your GPA and upload your unofficial transcript.

If you have any questions please contact nicole-delcastillo@uiowa.edu.

Congratulations to 2017 SHPEP Graduate and current Doctor of Pharmacy student, Milagro Michels-Cordao, on being named a 2022 Diversity Catalyst Award recipient! Milagro also served as a SHPEP Fellow in 2020 and 2021, providing mentorship and guidance to our scholars in addition to program support to our staff.

The awards take place on virtually on Wednesday, April 20th from 3-4:30pm (info in link):

As a first-generation college student from a low-income immigrant household in rural Iowa, Doctor of Pharmacy student Milagro Michels-Cordao embodies the resilience it can take to even make it to college in the face of life’s adversities.

“I have been wonderfully privileged to have the right roadblocks removed to stand here with you today,” Michels-Cordao told a group of hundreds of state and local leaders. “And that is a lifelong goal of mine: To help others remove their roadblocks.”

As she spoke, she wore the white coat of the pharmacist, topped by an Iowa button. Her remarks were made at a ceremony dedicated to the highly accessible new pharmacy building. Removing life obstacles for others is the very spirit of advocacy and empowerment that University of Iowa leaders who are passionate about diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) foster.

While pursuing her BS in Human Physiology at the University of Iowa, she was a Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) scholar and volunteered for Mobile Clinic. As a pharmacy student, she has gone above and beyond to advocate for DEI within her community. She has been a fellow with SHPEP for the past two years, as well as having been a founding member of the DEI Initiative Committee at the UI College of Pharmacy. She also has continued her involvement with the UI Mobile Clinic and is a COVID-19 Immunization Clinic Coordinator. She currently plans on pursuing a residency program after graduation, specializing in psychiatry to work on improving mental health within the community.

Our Story

For over 30 years, the Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) has been shaping careers and changing lives for its past scholars. The FREE six-week academic enrichment program provides a rigorous curriculum, mentoring, and networking opportunities that many of its more than 22,000 alumni describe as life-altering.

The University of Iowa Health Sciences Colleges began offering SHPEP in 2017. The Health Sciences Colleges include the Carver College of Medicine, College of Dentistry, College of Pharmacy, and College of Public Health. We strongly believe in the value of exposing students from underrepresented backgrounds to the possibility of pursuing health fields and supporting their goals in accomplishing that dream to help improve the health of society at large.

All students who meet the Summer Health Professions Education Program eligibility requirements are encouraged to apply. Applicants must meet the following requirements:
