Service Dog Project Inc.

Service Dog Project Inc. Service Dog Project Inc. is a non-profit organization training Great Dane Service Dogs for mobility. Our second mission is to serve our local community.

SDP’s main mission is to breed, raise, train, and donate certified service dogs to people who experience difficulty with their balance or mobility. These partnerships often help to enhance the recipient’s quality of life as they attain greater independence. Preference is given to military veterans, first responders and their families. SDP’s farm is a destination for all ages — from teens doing community service, to seniors in search of a meaningful task and social interaction, to military veterans (many with PTSD) who enjoy feeling useful and connected while doing farm chores. Our Road Show project of dogs and trainers visiting senior centers provides much-needed smiles and comfort.

From tiny paws to life-changing partners.

Did you know Great Danes are born weighing just over a pound each, with 7-10 pups in a litter? By 8 weeks, they tip the scale at 20-25 lbs—already on their way to becoming gentle giants.

Every one of these pups could grow up to change a life. Curious how a newborn Dane becomes a steady support for someone with a mobility and/or balance challenge?

Walnut wasn’t afraid to visit Costco on the Tuesday of Thanksgiving week. He did a great job navigating the holiday crowd in search of a turkey and all the fixings. Regular exposure to busy venues has allowed Walnut to get much more comfortable with people behind him. After Costco, Walnut went to Stop & Shop to complete his Thanksgiving menu, then on to the Essex County Co-Op (good spot to train around other dogs) and Topsfield Town Hall (great to practice stairs). Walnut has shown marked improvement over the last few months and is getting closer to being match ready with each training outing.

Miss Peanut was busy this morning checking out early Black Friday deals at Kittery Trading Post. With lots of shoppers in the store, it was a great opportunity for her to work on getting more comfortable with people all around her. A set of rocking chairs in the middle of the store was a perfect place for Peanut and Trainer John to camp out for awhile and people watch, with the ultimate goal of achieving boredom. Peanut’s homework is to practice “leave it,” as she has a very curious nose with both people and merchandise. She has become somewhat of a regular at the store, with employees welcoming her back today and commenting how much she has improved in the last few weeks. Peanut also stopped by Stonewall Kitchen and Columbia Sportswear.

One partnership. Two hearts. Endless new horizons.

A Great Dane with the strength to steady, and the gentleness to reassure. Today, our recipient chooses the path ahead on her own terms, with her partner's steady support beside her.

Service Dog Trainee Cashew got into the holiday spirit today while training at Walmart in Sanford, ME. He insisted that Trainer Doug let him model some Christmas bling. Cashew was a great sports about it, and you can tell by his face that he loved every moment of the fashion show 🤣. He’s looking for input on if you prefer him in red or silver.

Why do we choose Great Danes only?

Their height and gentle strength make all the difference for people living with balance or mobility challenges. A Great Dane’s sturdy build means real support, whether you’re managing MS, Parkinson’s, or another neurological disability. Plus, every dog spends 1.5 years in training to become the best possible partner.

Curious about how these gentle giants help restore independence? Visit our website at www.servicedogproject.org or our Facebook/Instagram page and see our teams in action.
