Service Dog Project Inc.

Service Dog Project Inc. Service Dog Project Inc. is a non-profit organization training Great Dane Service Dogs for mobility. Our second mission is to serve our local community.

SDP’s main mission is to breed, raise, train, and donate certified service dogs to people who experience difficulty with their balance or mobility. These partnerships often help to enhance the recipient’s quality of life as they attain greater independence. Preference is given to military veterans, first responders and their families. SDP’s farm is a destination for all ages — from teens doing community service, to seniors in search of a meaningful task and social interaction, to military veterans (many with PTSD) who enjoy feeling useful and connected while doing farm chores. Our Road Show project of dogs and trainers visiting senior centers provides much-needed smiles and comfort.

More from Cashew’s morning at the DECA competition. He took refuge from the 1,000+ high school students in the lobby to practice recall and other skills on the much quieter second floor of the hotel. Such a happy boy!

Before practicing recall, Walnut wanted to pose by the tree for a picture. We think he likes to show off how handsome he is, especially modeling his 5/A BAKER Blanket 🤩!

Walnut always enjoys practicing recall. He has learned to “tone it down” a bit with regards to speed, and he consistently arrives at his handler in the proper position.

Cashew had an incredible training opportunity last week, when 1,300 students descended on the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Boston North Shore for the DECA District Competition. DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe. Cashew spent two hours at the hotel, with some of the time walking the crowds, and other times just lying down and observing. Cashew was very anxious when we first arrived, but with the constant exposure, he did an outstanding job of settling in. We broke away from the hustle and bustle a few times to practice stairs and recall, which he excelled at doing. In one of the quieter moments, as we walked past the fitness center, there was a distant mirror that he noticed catching his reflection. Among the attached photos, you will see him intrigued by the very handsome Dane in the mirror that looked exactly like him 🤣! Silly boy!

Piper did an excellent job during her Friday afternoon shopping excursion at the Northshore Mall. She is among our more “bombproof” trainees, so the hustle and bustle of holiday shopping did not bother her at all. She has gotten much better staying focused around strange dogs, and that discipline was tested by a “fake” service dog in the mall. As she is doing well with all her skills, Piper’s current training emphasis is on fixing her tendency to drift a little ahead while walking. She is great with the “self correct” when she realizes she is out of position, but with a few more outings, she will sort that out. We are so proud of the progress she has made!

Pecan wishes everyone a happy Saturday from the Northshore Mall! She and fellow trainee Piper traveled down from Maine to get in on the holiday shopping madness. They started on separate ends of the mall with trainers Doug and John, and only crossed paths once in their nearly two-hour training adventure. Of course, when they saw one another, they acted like they hadn’t seen each other in years 🤣. Stay tuned for photos from Piper’s day at the mall!

Berry wanted to be sure we supported local businesses so we stopped to visit our friends at The Perfectly Imperfect Gift Shop. While Berry enjoyed all the amazing offerings she was particularly drawn to all the lovely jewelry and needed to rest for a moment to decide on what to purchase.

Following in the footsteps of Cricket’s and Walnut’s visit to Salem State University last week, Cashew and Peanut met today with students, faculty, and staff at North Shore Community College (northshorecc) to offer some stress relief for students during final exams. The tutoring center became “Grand Central” for an hour, with students flowing in and out to meet our dogs and take selfies. The staff even joked about how they wished the tutoring center got that many visits every day!

Cashew traveled down from Maine on Saturday to train at the busy Northshore Mall, which was full of holiday shoppers. Much like his brother Walnut did on a recent visit to the mall, Cashew spent a good deal of time working on achieving boredom amidst the frenzied shopping environment. The mall has plenty of areas for our dogs to do down/stays near high-traffic areas. Cashew did a great job acclimating to the crowds during his visit, with increasing confidence throughout the day. He also got so many compliments, that Trainer Doug thinks Cashew might need to start wearing a sign that says, “Thank you, I know I’m good looking.” 🤩

Walnut had to break out the winter coat this morning to attend the Boxford Winter Festival. Organized by the West Boxford Improvement Society, the event gave Walnut an opportunity to check out lots of local artisans and vendors, get up close with a fire and rescue truck, climb up into a hay wagon, and supervise s’mores making at an outdoor fireplace. The indoor photo at Yuletide Marketplace was from early on, when the crowd was still growing. Prior to leaving, Walnut visited the marketplace a second time, and the building was packed wall to wall with people. It was a great opportunity for Walnut to squeeze through crowds of children and adults. He stayed very well composed and didn’t flinch when he got bumped or was on the receiving end of some “unauthorized” pats.
