UCI Health urologist Dr. Pengbo Jiang recently performed the first U.S. procedure using radiofrequency electrodes to block the renal nerves that cause resistant hypertension.
This DeepQure device is minimally invasive, robot-assisted and studies the effectiveness of the HyperQure™ extravascular renal denervation system. The device wraps around a kidney artery and applys heat to destroy the renal nerves that contribute to uncontrollable hypertension.

Uncontrolled hypertension is a serious health threat affecting millions of U.S. adults due to high blood pressure that cannot be controlled despite taking three or more medications.

“If this treatment can reduce hypertension over the long term, the potential benefits could be massive,” said Jiang, an assistant professor of urology at the UC Irvine School of Medicine. “It would give patients the opportunity to decrease or stop taking blood pressure medications, which can have side effects.”
