Silicone implant ruptures can be harder to detect than many patients expect.

Unlike saline implants, silicone gel tends to stay in place if a rupture occurs, so breast size and shape may not noticeably change. In some cases, a rupture is associated with firmness or capsular contracture. In others, the breast can look and feel completely normal.

Not all breast implant ruptures look the same.

With saline implants, a rupture is often easier to identify because the breast can appear deflated as the saline is safely absorbed by the body. This can happen over time as implants age and wear, and it is not always related to injury or trauma.
