BABY FACT:
“When babies are picked up and carried, their heart rate slows and they automatically and deeply relax."
Most of us already know that babies love to be held and carried, and will often cry when they are put down. This fact is obvious for most parents, but the reason as to why this is, scientists are just beginning to understand.

Research has shown that babies deeply relax when they are carried and there is a physiological reason.
It is an evolutionary instinct that causes crying babies to calm down when they are picked up and carried in their mothers arms (although it does work with other caregivers as well). Their heart rate slows down and they become “deeply” relaxed as a result of a coordinated set of nervous, motor and cardiac regulations.

It is believed that this calming response is a survival trait seen in many mammals (including lions and squirrels) that reduces the “maternal burden of carrying”, making it more pleasurable to carry their babies and creating a benefit for both the mother and the infant.

Humans (as well as many other mammals) are a carrying species and our babies are born with this innate desire and predictable positive response.

You cannot spoil a newborn by holding and carrying them too much! Pick them up, wear them, cuddle them. Nature intended this for you and for them.
We have evolved this way for a reason. 💗

A frenum is the tissue that attaches the tongue to the bottom of the mouth. The frenum can either be too short or attached to far forward in the mouth to allow proper movement of the tongue for breastfeeding. There is also a frenum that attaches the lips to the gums. If this is too tight the lip can’t “flange” to enable a comfortable and efficient latch for breastfeeding. Frenums can also be found further back along the gum line, attaching to the cheek, causing difficulty opening the mouth and using the cheek muscles to transfer milk. These are called buccal ties. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣-
⁣Tongue, lip and buccal ties are also referred to as tethered oral tissues. Tethered oral tissues can prevent babies from latching or can cause ni**le pain and damage when the latch is poor. Often the first sign is painful breastfeeding. Another early sign is a baby who isn’t gaining weight or nursing enough to bring mom’s milk in. This can result in dehydration or jaundice and need for supplementation with formula. Sometimes mom gets through this painful feeding, and infant compensates at the breast in ways that cause an oversupply of milk for mom. These babies do well until they don’t. There comes a time when milk supply becomes more dependent on baby nursing efficiently. Babies with ties need to work really hard to get milk to come down, and some babies can’t keep up with the compensations and start to lose weight. Their inefficient nursing sets up a cycle that decreases mom’s supply, because breastfeeding is a delicate dance of supply and demand. ⁣⁣⁣

Oral restrictions at any point in life, especially lasting 6 months or more, can have a profound effect on proper development.
A lot of mothers are told these issues listed are “normal” or the baby will grow out of them. Mothers learn to blame themselves. At times, they’re told they aren’t producing enough milk, which can be devastating for any mother.

REFLUX

If your baby is diagnosed with reflux, it might be worth a second look! Aerophagia Induced Reflux is caused by excessive swallowing of air. Babies with a tongue- and/or lip-tie can have a poor latch or seal on the breast or the bottle, which can lead to taking in too much air with the milk they are getting!

It’s common practice for a baby to be put on reflux medications (proton pump inhibitors or H2 blockers) if parents come to their pediatrician with concerns of reflux. But these meds don’t come without their own risk! Babies given PPIs before age 1 were at 23% increased risk for bone fracture, and if H2 blockers were given at the same time, the risk of bone fracture went up to 31%. They can also prevent the absorption of calcium and iron.

Dr. Osafi took 1500 infants on reflux medication who had poor latch and painful breastfeeding and demonstrated that after frenum release, over half were able to get off of the medications! Another 19% still improved but stayed on the medication, and 23% had no change in reflux.

Let's look at the structure and function to see WHY this could be happening before we put babies on meds with potentially harmful side effects! -

Simply put a tongue-tie is piece of flesh under the tongue that tethers the tongue to floor of the mouth. ⁣

We ALL have this piece of flesh, called the frenulum, but sometimes when it is thick enough or too tightly attached, it restricts the tongue's movement affecting an infant's ability to breastfeed. ⁣

Most families come into our clinic because:⁣

- Mom is experiencing pain with breastfeeding, and has cracked or bleeding ni**les.

- ⁣Baby is spitting up often or has reflux. - Baby is experiencing excessive gassiness or fussiness.

- Feeding time at the breast or on the bottle is prolonged.

- Baby is not gaining weight or is losing weight.

- Mom's milk is not coming in or she is experiencing, hypogalactia (low milk supply).

These are some of the many reasons that tongue-ties may contribute to issues related to nursing, speech, and feeding. It is important to mention, that in many populations, a tight frenum may not be contributing to any issues. In such cases, treatment may not be indicated, this is why it's important to see a specialist preferred provider for proper evaluation and diagnosis.p

Yes! BREASTNURTURING!

"Breastfeeding is about so much more than food. So much so, that I often wish we could rename it! Breastnurturing seems a fitting term. Many mothers I meet become quite consumed with how much their baby is ‘feeding’. Worrying that they can’t have enough milk, that their baby is taking too much milk, their baby is ‘just feeding for comfort’ or making ‘bad’ sleep associations. The truth is that your baby will go to your breast for countless reasons. Milk is just one of them. Breastfeeding to comfort your baby, promote sleep and to connect are all important and normal reasons for your baby to be at your breast, along with meeting their requirements for milk. As a mother breastfeeds, it really does look something like this. Those amazing hormones that flood her brain also impact on the brain of her baby, enhancing and nurturing the bond between mother and child. Nutrition, Bonding, Immunity, Attachment, Safety, Responsive, Nurturing, Love. 💗🤱🏼"

❤ BREASTFEEDING FACT ❤️
Breast milk is both nutrition and “medicine” for your baby.

Human breast milk is custom made, contains all the nutrition that a human baby needs and hundreds of components that protect them from infection and contribute to their overall health. Just one drop of breast milk may contain more than a million white blood cells!

Also, your breast milk is custom made just for your baby, matching their genetic material by more than 50% since they both came from your body!

The brain is the fastest growing part of your baby’s body reaching half of its adult size by 9 months of age. Human milk contains 10 times the amount of lactose (or milk sugar) than cow’s milk, which feeds the baby’s rapidly growing brain, and gives breast milk it’s very sweet taste. One of the reasons why babies love it.

It contains completely different proteins than cow’s milk that are easily and quickly digested by your baby. Human milk is specifically made to grow the body slowly, while growing the brain quickly.

Human breast milk contains exactly the right proportions and is ever changing to adjust to your baby’s growth and needs. It changes over time, but also from day to night. Even based on your baby’s individual needs like if it’s hot or they’re sick and they need more hydration.

Your body will even make milk designed specifically for the needs of your preterm baby.

It’s truly amazing and life-saving!

“Not only I am a gushing mom, I am also a proud Emergency Department Nurse. Three weeks ago my husband and I welcomed our 4th baby, our first girl, into this world! At first, quarantine was exactly what this momma needed while recovering from major surgery, bonding with my newborn and enjoying family time. ⁣

When week 2 of my leave hit last week, that all came to a halt. I was informed that due to critical staffing needs, my bonding leave was being denied. It was explained to me that after my 8 weeks disability for surgical recovery, I was to report back to the frontlines with mandatory overtime, less then adequate PPE, and no special considerations would be made for nursing mothers. ⁣

My husband is a firefighter so unfortunately my newborn and our other children have double the exposure possibility. COVID-19 is robbing me of this precious, fleeting time. I refuse to let it define the time I do have! I'm focusing on family first and soaking up every newborn snuggle I have.⁣”
