Thank you Maria Loyd Lmft for inviting me to talk about the highly sensitive person. It was great to get a little real and to provide some insight and tips to navigate this personality trait. :).

Choice.

I think about this from a creation perspective and in my belief that we were given choices -free will -our own signature of being. Personally this speaks to the opposite of control and the beauty of humanity and relationships because when you chose it’s something you decide. I believe this is how God designed it because he wanted a real relationship where he gets our “yes”. Relationship in its purest form can’t be forced but has to be chosen. To me God is the creator of that framework from himself to humanity.

This also makes me think 🤔 about choice when we go to therapy or when we sit and unpack our inner world. It’s a vulnerable place to go but it’s also a sacred “yes” to feel-to be known -to invite -to witness etc.

As a therapist: I consider this choice for people to open up as sacred. They don’t have to. They don’t have to chose to do that with me. And as a therapist I think there is a very delicate line of being with vs charging forward. Informed choices are important but to know every human has choice is a part of dignity. Humanity. Respect. and autonomy. That’s the beauty of being a witness to people’s process. And although I can support even guide at times it’s always their choice. And to me that is sacred.

When someone trusts to open up it’s a choice.
When someone chooses to face things and let you see them it’s a choice. When we allow someone into our vulnerability it’s a choice.

That’s why I think that choice is sacred because it can only be made by the individual and who they are.

This has been running through my mind lately. Empathy -giving -being there for someone else -loving -sacrifice. These are all wonderful and courageous values and qualities. But when empathy is not grounded in truth it can become self abandonment. Truth can look like : where do I begin and end and where does another begin and end. What are my needs and boundaries ? Who do I want to be without Losing who I am? How do i view this myself and other with clarity and possibly curiosity if needed. Truth can also be a clear enough vision of other. When one can sit and hold these pieces honestly and also look at am I showing up love -empathy and truth or fear. We can be both fearful and empathetic and still make a Choice how to show up. But we can show up more from a place of agency than fear. It’s a process to figure it out and think each person will be different. But there’s something about holding onto self honestly while extending empathy to other so that empathy doesn’t create self abandonment without our entire permission.
