Sustain recovery offers a unique approach to adolescent care. Unlike a typical residential treatment program in which the length of stay is 30-90 days, Sustain Recovery offers Gender Separate Extended Care treatment for clients recently completing a primary treatment program, or our clients needing a longer-term solution. Our minimum length of stay is 90 days however many clients are with Sustain

Recovery for 6 months or more, but can vary based on our residents progress and individual needs. Our gender separate program offers a safe and structured environment for teens in which our residents are able to maintain a meaningful and fun substance free way of life. Individualized drug and alcohol counseling, support groups, individual therapy, family therapy, educational and vocational training, life skills, and referrals and transportation services are ongoing elements of the transitional process. Sustain Recovery residences are twelve step based homes, and promote attendance of twelve step meetings by all of our residents. At Sustain Recovery, we have observed repeated cases in which the drastic change from short-term intensive inpatient treatment to unstructured sober living or immediately returning back home has resulted in relapse. This is especially true for adolescents with co-occurring disorders, due to the difficult process of adjusting to the home environment without the use of drugs or alcohol, staying away from negative influences, and the lack of internal structure. As we see it, the structure that was imposed on the individual in addiction treatment (the clinical schedule), cannot be sustained without ongoing attention to structure. We know that when a resident comes into an Extended Care Treatment environment, which initially provides the same degree of structure as treatment, the necessary healthy living skills can be (re)introduced and utilized in “real time”, in the real world, with the support and safety net of the Sustain Recovery staff and community. Many times the teens going through this experience have dropped out of school, have legal issues secondary to their substance use, and are without a safe and sober environment to live. The need for a more structured Extended Care geared towards teens that focuses on adult living skills, education, involvement in Twelve Step organizations and fun in recovery, is what is at the core of Sustain Recovery. As our residents are introduced to the opportunities to do worthwhile and esteem-able tasks, they develop self-worth and self-esteem.

Twenty years ago "virtual therapy" sounded like something from science fiction.

Today? It's how millions of people access mental health care.

Virtual treatment works, especially for the generation that's grown up entirely in a digitally connected world.

Sustain Connection isn't trying to replace traditional therapy. We're meeting teens where they already are, in digital spaces where they feel comfortable, competent, and connected.
This is what modern adolescent mental health care looks like. Evidence-based. Accessible. Relevant to how teens actually live their lives.

The future isn't virtual OR in-person. It's both/and, offering families choices that fit their unique needs.

Welcome to the evolution of teen treatment. Welcome to Sustain Connection.

For anxious teens, the social calculation of in-person group therapy is exhausting. They're so busy managing social anxiety that they can't focus on the actual therapeutic content.

The structure of virtual groups creates breathing room for teens who struggle with social anxiety, allowing them to participate authentically without the additional burden of managing in-person group dynamics.

When the format supports rather than triggers their anxiety, teens can focus on healing instead of surviving the session.

Something about hearing peers share vulnerably gives teens permission to do the same. It's not a therapist asking questions. It's other teenagers saying, "Me too. I feel that too. I thought I was the only one."

Virtual doesn't mean disconnected. Sometimes, it means teens can be more honest precisely because there's a screen creating just enough safety to be brave.

Different cities. Same video screen. Shared healing.

That's the power of Sustain Connection's statewide virtual model. It brings together teens from across California who would never have access to the same group otherwise.

Your teen's healing community isn't limited by your address anymore. They can connect with peers from Redding to San Diego, all working toward the same goals, all showing up for each other.

We measure success not just in clinical progress markers but in the moments families share with us:

The first family dinner without an argument.
The parent who sleeps through the night for the first time in months.
The sibling who says, "I have my brother back."

These moments are why we do this work. And why we created Sustain Connection, to make evidence-based, compassionate, effective treatment accessible to more families.

For years, families across Southern California have turned to Sustain Recovery for evidence-based adolescent treatment delivered with compassion and clinical excellence.

Our residential program, PHP, and in-person IOP have helped hundreds of teens and families navigate anxiety, depression, substance use, family conflict, and dual diagnosis concerns.

Now, that same expertise is available to families across California through Sustain Connection, our Virtual IOP program.

Recovery isn't just about insight or motivation. It's about structure.

Structure creates predictability. Predictability creates safety. Safety creates space for change.

The structure of our virtual IOP holds teens accountable while providing the consistency and predictability that makes healing possible.

When structure protects the work, change becomes sustainable.

Most teens were never taught emotional regulation. They're expected to just know how to manage anxiety, rage, depression, and feeling overwhelmed.

When teens develop these skills, everything improves: relationships with parents, performance at school, ability to maintain friendships, self-confidence, and resilience.

At Sustain Connection, emotional regulation isn't a side topic, it's the foundation of our programming. These are life skills that serve teens far beyond treatment.

Social isolation deepens depression and anxiety. It reinforces the belief that "I'm different" or "nobody understands." It removes one of the most powerful protective factors teens have, meaningful peer connection.

Traditional residential treatment often requires complete separation from peers for weeks or months. Sometimes that's clinically necessary. But when it's not, maintaining healthy friendships can support recovery rather than threatening it.

We're not naive about peer influence. Therapists work with each teen to evaluate which relationships support their growth and which ones threaten progress.

Sometimes, staying connected to the right peers while building new skills creates better long-term outcomes.

When your teen is struggling, the whole family feels it.

Communication breaks down. Siblings walk on eggshells. Parents disagree about how to help. Everyone's exhausted, and nobody knows how to make it better.

That's why Sustain Connection treats your teen and your family together.

Sustain Connection delivers the full depth of an intensive outpatient program complete with the assessment, individualization, clinical supervision, and accountability measures that define quality treatment.

This is the same clinical framework used in our residential, PHP, and in-person IOP programs. Virtual delivery doesn't change the standards, it changes the location.
