Today we launch the first ever Disabled & Deaf Trans People’s Survey (DTPS)!

Ableism is woven into our everyday systems yet the knowledge of disabled and Deaf trans people has often been overlooked in research, leadership development, and philanthropy. Collecting stories and data will create opportunities for our leadership and momentum to tell our collective story and fight for our rights and needs.

The DTPS is a survey created by and for disabled and Deaf trans people. This survey gives disabled and Deaf trans people a tool to advocate for ourselves, to organize, and to transform movement spaces.

Please participate in the survey by visiting the survey website!

It was truly delightful, a few months ago, to take a break from the production to-do lists and talk to Ciarra Ross, a writer, educator, doula, and holistic health practitioner. Ericka and Sebastian interviewed Ciarra about her movement work inside and outside Disability Justice. She reflected on the importance of the survey, saying, “There’s a lot less room to deny your own experience when you have so many other people’s experiences at your fingertips. I think that surveys really offer the opportunity for you to get really intimate with your own story.”

We consulted many community members to help prioritize accessibility and to ensure that this survey is relevant to disabled and Deaf communities and our lives. We can’t wait to hear your stories! Thank you for taking a moment to participate in this first of a kind survey and pass on the word.
With gratitude,

Ericka A. Dixon, Disability Project Senior National Organizer
Sebastian Margaret, Disability Project Senior National Organizer
Ma'ayan Anafi, Community Advisory Board Member

Subject: Undergraduate Opportunity to Advance Sexual and Gender Minoritized Community Health Research

Hello!

Are you interested in getting experience in public health research? Are you passionate about sexual and gender minoritized (LGBTQ+) community health? Are you entering your last two years of undergrad? Do you have 10-20 hours a week available for paid employment? If so, keep reading!

I am Dr. Arayasirikul - more about me and my work can be read here: https://publichealth.uci.edu/faculty/arayasirikul-sean/ - and I'm looking to add a couple of talented individuals to my research team. I am a public health medical sociologist who examines the impacts of oppression and intersectional stigma on the health of sexual and gender minoritized communities, especially BIPOC and trans and nonbinary folks. My work harnesses the transformative power of community-engaged research, digital technologies, and homegrown interventions to understand and most importantly disrupt inequities in health and well-being - including, but not limited to, HIV prevention and care, substance use and mental health screening and treatment, and discrimination and violence. I am looking for undergraduate research assistants (RAs) to work on the following two projects:
SHINE Strong: support a mentorship and training program to develop the next generation of HIV prevention scientists with expertise in trans and nonbinary population health.
No One Asked Us: recruit and consent participants, facilitate PhotoVoice groups, assist in qualitative data analysis, and plan and implement a PhotoVoice exhibition.
Other projects in the future may be available for RAs to work on depending on specialized skillsets and interests.
If you are interested in applying to be an undergraduate research assistant, please submit an application to Job #7856776 on Handshake. Detailed cover letters explaining your interest in and passion for this work are highly recommended. I hope to hear from you soon!

Respectfully Yours,

SURVEY for Designing Beyond the Binary: Building Empathy and Gender-Inclusive Tools for Equitable Built Environments

Hello!

Your input is needed for a survey on gender equity in design. This survey seeks to understand the place-based lived experiences of trans, nonbinary, gender nonconforming, q***r individuals and communities as they navigate the places and spaces of daily life (home, work, school, public space, recreation, etc.). Your contribution will help generate tools for equitable design and support urban designers, architects, landscape architects, and interior designers in the co-creation of equitable and inclusive places.

The survey asks demographic questions, but no identifiable information is collected. All responses are anonymous. The survey will take less than 20 minutes to complete. At the end of the survey, there is an opportunity to enter a drawing to win a $100 gift card. (You will be asked to use an email address to enter the drawing, but your email will be unattached from any data you provide and discarded after the drawing.) For each response, up to 1,000 responses, we will be donating $1 to The Trevor Project, a non-profit organization focused on su***de prevention efforts among LGBTQIA2+ youth.

Follow this link to the survey. (https://beyondthebinary.typeform.com/survey)

Your participation is greatly appreciated! The survey will remain open until the end of January. Feel free to forward this email and survey link to your networks. For questions about the research, contact beyondthebinary@mithun.com.

This research is funded by Mithun.

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help this along. Thank you so much for your time!
