Tax Day has been postponed this year, but it is right around the corner! To help your children understand practical uses of mathematics in real life and improve their financial literacy, you can them about taxes and even involve them in the tax filing process if you do your own taxes. Additionally, the resources on the following site can help introduce your child to financial concepts. These resources are appropriate for grades 3 to 12. It’s never too early to learn!

In today’s world, we spend a lot of time indoors for work or school, which means less exposure to sunshine. Here in Southern California, we get so much sunshine we can easily take it for granted! Sunlight is a great source of vitamin D, which helps our brains release chemicals such as serotonin and endorphins. Hit the beach the next time you feel like you need a self-care day (Remember to wear proper sun protection!). 😎☀️✨

Are you concerned about your kids spending way too much time on their phones and computers?

Something fun you can do together as a family is play games together! Games are engaging and help build skills such as critical thinking and creativity.

A great game to play together is Taboo, which is similar to charades but rather than acting, clues are given using verbal explanations. This game helps develop word association, metacognition, and vocabulary, and is fun for the whole family!!! 😃

Metacognition is a complex skill, but to put it simply, metacognition is the ability to THINK about THINKING. The ability to do this appears around middle childhood, and can be improved through practice. Why is it important to be able to think about thinking? For students, being able to do this allows them to identify what they know and what they don’t know by themselves rather than relying on an external source (teachers, tutors, tests, etc.) to inform them. This empowers students to become more successful learners! ✨

We teach our kids to seek help when they need it, and as adults, sometimes it is easy to forget to do the same. Whether it is in the workplace, at home, at school, or in any other setting, there are things that are challenging to handle on our own. There is no shame in asking for help - feeling supported by even just one person can make a world of difference.
