Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute

Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute An academic institute focused on scientific research and education in integrative medicine. We offer a combination of Western and complementary treatments.

The Susan Samueli Center for Integrative Medicine at UC Irvine School of Medicine, rated one of the top 50 U.S. medical schools by U.S. News & World Report, is an academic center focused on scientific research and education in integrative medicine. The center offers Western allopathic integrative medicine as well as complementary treatments such as acupuncture, naturopathy, Chinese herbal medicine, massage, yoga and education. The center was established in 2001 with a generous gift of $5.7 million from Henry and Susan Samueli to take a leadership role in exploring the frontiers of complementary and integrative medicine. Growing interest in integrative approaches for maintaining wellness, preventing disease and treating specific illnesses created a need for such a center to conduct rigorous scientific investigations of the physiological effects of these treatments. Education in this field is also a high priority of the center. The medical community is becoming more interested in integrative approaches that embrace nonconventional medical interventions as part of medical treatment when they are supported by solid scientific research. The Susan Samueli Center for Integrative Medicine is putting some of these approaches into practice. We also are working to educate both the medical and the lay communities about the benefits and risks associated with new approaches to the practice of medicine.

Being kind really does pay off!

Dr. Robert McCarron, our director of education and a professor in the UC Irvine School of Medicine's Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, recently spoke to ABC7 about the positive effects that kindness may have on pain.

Dr. McCarron highlights research that shows practicing kindness toward others *and yourself* can help ease feelings of physical pain.

What's something kind that you did today? 🤲

This Nutrition Month, we're celebrating plant-based protein! For her deliciously vibrant Green Hummus, Chef Jess uses edamame soybeans, a protein-rich ingredient that is packed with healthy fats and fiber and is a great source of iron.

Here's how to make Chef Jess' Green Hummus 💚

Ingredients:
16 oz shelled edamame beans, fresh or frozen
1/3 cup packed cilantro, stems and leaves
3 tablespoons white miso
6 tablespoons tahini
6 tablespoons lime or lemon juice
1 tablespoon ground cumin
6 cloves garlic
6 tablespoons olive oil
3- 9 tablespoons water, more as needed
Salt to taste

1. Cook/thaw the edamame beans if you need to. Bring a large pot of water to a boil and place the edamame in the water for 5 minutes. Immediately drain and set aside.
2. In a food processor or blender, combine the edamame with cilantro, miso, tahini, garlic, cumin, and juice, and blend until smooth.
3. Drizzle in the olive oil and water with the motor running to reach your desired consistency.
4. Season to taste with salt.

As Heart Health Month begins, we're proud to honor Margaret “Maggie” Boomgaarden, ND, a post-graduate trainee at the Samueli Institute, who has been awarded Diplomate status by the American Board of Clinical Lipidology. This nationally recognized certification reflects her advanced training in the study and management of cholesterol and related cardiometabolic conditions, which play key roles in cardiovascular health.

She is the only naturopathic doctor to have received this distinguished recognition and one of just 1,200 physicians nationwide who have achieved this designation.
