Large upper lip basal cell carcinoma treated with Mohs surgery, followed by reconstruction by Dr. Grace Kim Austin. ✨

After tumor removal, the defect involved approximately 60% of the right lateral upper lip subunit, including the vermilion border. A single-stage melolabial transposition flap was used to reconstruct the lip skin defect using adjacent cheek tissue. The vermilion (red lip) was restored with a mucosal advancement graft from the inner lip along with fat grafting for contour and volume.

After removal of a basal cell carcinoma on the upper lip, Dr. Austin used staged local tissue reconstruction + fat grafting to restore natural contour, softness, and symmetry. The upper lip is key for speech, expression & function, so precise planning is crucial to preserve both function and aesthetics.

Swelling is improving and scars will continue to mature—healing is a process, and we’re excited to see the progress!
