Dr. Joycelyn Elders, 92 years old and a retired pediatrician, stands as a trailblazer in American public health. She is a proud graduate of Philander Smith College (now University), where she earned her BS in Biology degree and graduated as valedictorian.
Rising from humble beginnings in Arkansas, she went on to become the first Black United States Surgeon General, appointed in 1993. A fearless advocate for public health equity, Dr. Elders championed expanded healthcare access, comprehensive health education, and preventative care for underserved communities. Her leadership challenged the nation to confront difficult conversations around health disparities, reproductive health, and systemic inequities.
From the classrooms of an HBCU to the highest medical office in the country, Dr. Eldersβ legacy is a testament to the transformative power of HBCUs and the bold leadership they cultivate.
