EN: Meet Benjamin T. Hutchison, MD
Wake Forest University School of Medicine

Dr. Hutchison is the recipient of the EMF/EMRA Resident Research Grant ($9,999), supporting his project, “ACE of SPADES: Assessment of Chest Pain in Patients with Known Coronary Artery Disease in the Emergency Department.”
His work focuses on one of the most high-stakes decisions in emergency medicine: evaluating chest pain in patients we already know are at risk. Better tools. Sharper decisions. Stronger outcomes.
This is how emergency medicine keeps moving forward. 🔬⚡️

EN: Turning Ideas into Impact:
Dr. Deborah A. Levine of Weill Cornell Medicine has been awarded a $100,000 EMF Pilot Research Grant to advance her project, “Salivary miRNA and Elevated Intracranial Pressure in Children with CSF Shunt Malfunction.” Her research explores how saliva-based biomarkers could help physicians more quickly identify dangerous increases in intracranial pressure in children with shunts, potentially transforming how these emergencies are detected and treated.
This is where the next breakthrough begins. 🔬✨

That’s a wrap on the 2026 Grantee Workshop.

Inspired and genuinely in awe of the researchers who are shaping the future of emergency medicine.

These conversations reminded us why this work matters. Bold ideas. Thoughtful questions. Real solutions that will impact patients and physicians alike.

Grateful for each of our grantees and the work they are doing to move emergency care forward.

Day 2: Consultancy Session

The real work happens in the room.

Today our grantees stepped into a candid, closed-door consultancy session — a space to unpack the real questions behind the research. Funding hurdles. Career pivots. Study design challenges. Work-life realities. The stuff that doesn’t always make it into the abstract.

The goal? Honest conversation. Practical guidance. Zero posturing.

When brilliant minds are given a safe, supportive environment to think out loud, breakthroughs follow.

Research moves faster when no one has to figure it out alone.

An update from 2025/26 Grantee Utsha Khatri, MD, MSHP at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
Supported by a $100,000 Pilot Research Grant, her team is studying how starting buprenorphine in the emergency department changes long-term treatment engagement and reduces repeat ED visits for patients with opioid use disorder.

One visit. A different trajectory.
