Janie Flores
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Janie Flores. After suffering health issues for many years, Janie departed this life on December 10th, 2025, at the age of 87. She is now healed and is at peace. Janie left us peacefully, and left behind a legacy of love, kindness and cherished memories.
Janie was born on June 19th, 1938, in Angus, Texas to Juan Rodriguez, Sr. and Manuela Mora, and grew up in the towns of Mexia and Corsicana, Texas. She graduated from Corsicana High School in 1956 and furthered her education at Navarro Junior College and East Texas State College earning a bachelor’s degree in education in 1960. She was very active in high school and college activities including newspaper editor, National Honor Society, Vice President of Student Council, yearbook staff, Phi Theta Kappa, Senorita’s dance, Future Business Leaders of America, and was named Valentine Sweetheart.
On June 24, 1961, Janie married the love of her life, Frank C. Flores. After getting married, the couple moved to Irving, Texas, where they continued to live until her death.
Although her degree was in education, Janie began her career with the United States Department of Labor in January 1962. She worked for the following DOL agencies, Wage Hour, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Office of Regional Director and Occupational Safety and Health. To spend more time with her family, she stepped away from full-time employment from 1977-1988. During that time, she worked part-time with the City of Irving Public Library. This allowed her to earn the titles of Girl Scout leader, Baseball Mom (not only to her son, but to others on the team), Official Score Keeper for Coach Flores, Volunteer for the Irving Independent School District and Irving Public Library. Janie even earned the prestigious honor of receiving the Lifetime PTA Membership Award.
Once her children were older, she returned to work for the Federal Government and fully retired in January 2004 after 32 years of service. During her entire career, Janie always kept family first. While she had opportunities to advance into professional, higher-grade positions, because of the love she had for the secretarial field and devotion to her family, she chose to remain in a field which would be less demanding of her time outside the normal work hours. Janie always wanted to have the flexibility to be able to attend her children/grandchildren’s activities or sporting events even if it meant traveling out of state.
Once she became a MIMI, she continued to be involved in the lives of her children and grandchildren. She would not miss a sporting event: baseball; her most favorite, soccer, basketball, football, softball, volleyball, and even the fine arts; choir, theater and band. Her grandchildren could always count on her to be in the stands or the audience cheering them on. Janie also volunteered at the schools her grandchildren attended and earned the honor of being named Volunteer of the Year for Roanoke Elementary.
Family was always important to Janie, and she was supportive in any way possible. Her family ties included the love for her nieces and nephews, their significant others, and their children. Janie was never considered an ‘in-law’, simply a sister. Known to not only her family as MIMI, but her love also extended to the friends of her children and grandchildren.
Janie was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She is lovingly survived by her husband of 64 years, Frank Flores, Sr.; children, Christina Mayfield, and son, Frank Flores, Jr.; sister, Wallie Hairod, and brother, Rafael Gonzalez, Jr. Grandchildren; Madison, Landon and Owen Flores and Mason Mayfield. And she is survived by numerous nieces, nephews and other family members.
There was an amazing reunion in Heaven the day Janie earned her Angel wings. She is preceded in death by her parents, Juan Rodriguez, Sr, Manuela Mora, stepfather Rafael Gonzalez, Sr., brothers, Manuel Rodriguez, Sr. and Juan Rodriguez, Sr., Son in Law, Tim Mayfield and granddaughter Kailyn Nicole Mayfield. She was also greeted by many other relatives who have gone before her.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Janie’s remarkable Life. Arrangements are made with Chism-Smith Funeral Home: 403 S. Britain Road, Irving, Texas. Visitation at the funeral home: Thursday, December 18, 2025, from 3:00 pm-7:00 pm. Funeral service at the funeral home: Friday, December 19, 2025, at 10:00am. Burial will follow at Calvary Hill Cemetery 3235 Lombardy Ln. Dallas, Texas
Janie will be deeply missed, and fondly remembered for the love, kindness and support she showed to those she loved, and she will forever live in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.
