Next in the Sully Speaker series is- Where environment meets healing: advancing blood cancer care and awareness by Dr. Brian Betts
Dr. Brian C. Betts, a hematologist and oncologist at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, specializes in treating blood cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma, and bone marrow disorders through stem-cell transplantation and advanced cellular therapies that harness the immune system to destroy cancer. Blood cancers begin when normal blood-forming cells in the bone marrow are damaged—sometimes due to environmental exposures like radiation, benzene, or certain pesticides, which can alter DNA and increase cancer risk. For the Seneca people, whose lands and waters have faced industrial pollution and chemical runoff, understanding these connections between environmental health and cancer is especially important. By linking cutting-edge treatment with education and prevention, Dr. Betts’s work helps build a path toward healthier communities and more equitable access to care.
Dr. Brian C. Betts is Vice Chair of Strategic Initiatives in the Department of Medicine – Transplant & Cellular Therapy and a Professor of Oncology at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center in Buffalo, NY. A board-certified hematologist and oncologist, he specializes in stem-cell and marrow transplantation, cellular therapy, and the treatment of blood cancers such as acute leukemia, myelodysplastic syndromes, and myeloproliferative neoplasms. His research focuses on engineering immune cells to make transplantation and cell therapies safer and more effective, including a recent NIH-funded project developing CD83-targeted cell therapy for acute myeloid leukemia. Trained at the University of Minnesota and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Dr. Betts combines clinical leadership with translational research, helping expand Roswell Park’s cell-therapy program and advance next-generation treatments for hematologic malignancies.
