A HUGE thank you to the Shelby County Master Gardeners who led the children's grow sack program today. The weather was perfect! Each child got a reusable bag, added soil, planted potatoes, added more soil, and then added onions. The children will get to watch their vegetables grow all summer, harvest them, and eat them!

Tomorrow is our last day celebrating National Library Week. Join us for junk journal crafting from 9am-1pm.

Lunch at the Library was a popular place to eat today! Barrel Smoke BBQ Food Truck was out front of the library serving the community lunch today. The library board provided delicious homemade desserts for everyone to enjoy. It was a great day celebrating National Library Week with the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce & Industry who stopped by to see the library.

Tomorrow is a fun afternoon of planting potatoes and onions with the Shelby County Master Gardeners. This program is geared for youth in grades K-8th. Kids are welcome to stop by between 3:30-6pm to fill their garden grow sack. There are a few spots left. Let the library know by emailing liedlibrary@fmctc.com or message on FB to sign up.

As a public library, we want to offer as many resources as we can to our patrons. One resource that we have is InterLibrary Loan. This is a service through the state library that allows Iowa libraries to share books. If you are looking for a book or have a favorite author that we don't have in our library, we can request books from other libraries all free of charge! Each week our library gets books delivered as well as our library sending books out.

What a wonderful evening at the library tonight sipping tea and planting herbs! Kristina Larsen, owner of Mulberry Market, shared her knowledge on tea with us. She brought samples for everyone to take home and while we were planting, attendees could taste test ginger peach, blueberry wild child, and cocoa cherry. Kristina was also so kind to our library and donated two books on teas and tea gardens that are available for checkout.

Thursday from 11am-1pm is lunch at the library with Barrel Smoke BBQ food truck out front the library. The library board will be providing homemade desserts (FREE!) and drinks inside the library.

Our April book club will soon be here!

In The Red Address Book by Sofia Lundberg, one small book holds a lifetime of big memories.

96-year-old Doris has spent decades filling her red address book with the names of people she’s loved, lost, and never forgotten. As she flips through its worn pages, each crossed-out name tells a story of adventure, heartbreak, friendship, and resilience.

From glamorous Paris days to quiet moments of reflection, Doris’s journey reminds us that a life well-lived isn’t measured in years, but in connections. And sometimes, the simplest things—like an old address book—can hold the most extraordinary stories.

Ann Hanigan Kotz led us in an Iowa History class tonight at the Lied Irwin Public Library. She has recently written and published her fourth book, Wayward Son. Attendees learned about rogues and heroes of people all over Iowa.
Becky and Lee Ann tied with the most correct answers in Iowa trivia.
The library has a copy of her newest book available for checkout as well as her other three books.

Wednesday night we will have Herbal Tea Tasting. Kristina Larsen, with Mulberry Market, will be sharing her knowledge on teas and the healthy benefits. Attendees will also get to plant a herb to take home that is used to make herbal tea.

Thank you, Connie Petersen, for presenting Edible Flowers tonight. It was so interesting to learn about all the different kinds of flowers we can eat, along with recipes to try at home. We all enjoyed taste testing lavender and rose shortbread cookies served by a handsome young man.

Tuesday night at 6:30pm we have Iowa author Ann Hanigan coming to visit. Iowa trivia is involved!

As we celebrate National Library Week, we want to highlight things that the library offers to our patrons and the community. When people think of a library, they think of books. However, there is SO much more than that!
The Lied Irwin Public Library has a public computer available to anyone who needs access to one. We also offer printing services for documents and other papers. Patrons are able to print right from the computer or come in and make copies. Black and white copies are 25c and color is $1. The library also provides free Wi-Fi!

During National Library Week, April 19-25, 2026, discover your library joy.

• Help a friend sign up for a library card. It’s one small step that opens up endless possibilities.
