Anderson Lake Backyard ultra Recap! This ended up being my A-race this year. The Marquette 50 mile did not go as planned for several reasons, so I wanted to end my running season strong! I set out to do 62 miles with hope of doing more. This race was different than a point-to-point trail race. We completed 4.167 miles every hour, until everyone dropped or someone hit 24 hours. Then it was a race to the finish at 8:00am. It ended up being an 11:30-12:00 minute pace for me, because there were 6 generous hills between miles 2-3. Then most people tried to give themselves an 8-12 minute break between laps to refuel, bathroom, change, etc. The strategy changed throughout the day as legs got tired or you needed to stop for different reasons on course. The slower you ran, the less time there was for walking the inclines.
I felt strong until hour/ yard 13 and locked it into my head that I wanted to do 16 laps. That would push me over 100k and that was the fastest 100k I have ever ran. I enjoyed the forced pacing, because there was no time to think twice. I had to stay focused. I carried one soft flask and occasionally a bonus snack to eat during the hilly mile. It depended on how much I could eat at base camp. The goal was 500oz of liquid and 200-400 calories each lap. If I was hungry I ate more. Caffeine was enjoyed every 3-4 laps. This kept my stomach happy and my energy really consistent throughout the event. TMI I did need to problem solve a little, because I was having some gas issues around miles 40-50. I realized I was over drinking electrolytes. I was still drinking like it was 75 and humid ( like most of our summer). I switched to water and a handful of chips and my stomach was 💯 %% better!! I was struggling to eat, while keeping that pace for much longer and there were only 3 guys left still finishing each lap with 12+ minutes to spare. I was the last female and I was fighting for my 8-9 minutes. I knew they would make it 24 yards and I decided to prevent an injury or fall and call it a day. Thanks for a great event !
