The Ice Cutters’ Daughters of Maine — 1895

Long before refrigerators, the lifeblood of America’s summer came from frozen lakes — and in 1895, in the cold heart of Maine, women helped carve that lifeblood from the ice itself. They were known locally as the Ice Cutters’ Daughters, the wives and daughters of men who harvested massive blocks of winter ice to sell throughout New England and beyond.

When brutal winters struck and men fell ill or went to sea, these women took to the frozen lakes themselves. Wrapped in wool shawls and thick mittens, they hauled saws, tongs, and sleds across the glassy surface. The work was dangerous — one slip could mean death in the freezing water — yet they faced it with steady resolve.

One such woman, Abigail Carver of Skowhegan, became the first female foreman of an ice crew after her husband’s injury. She rose before dawn, led a team of six women, and cut through two feet of lake ice in subzero temperatures. Locals laughed — until her crew delivered more ice than any in the county.

The women learned to harness horses, drag 200-pound blocks up wooden ramps, and store them in sawdust-insulated ice houses. In summer, those same blocks cooled milk, butter, and meat — saving countless families from hunger and spoilage.

Abigail once said, “We didn’t work for praise. We worked because the world needed keeping cold.”

By the turn of the century, industrial ice plants replaced the lake harvesters, but the legend of the Ice Cutters’ Daughters lived on — a story of women who met winter’s fury with steel, sweat, and sisterhood.

Yes-nature, small town spirit, transformative , we couldn’t agree more.

Beyond the obvious lobster rolls and coastal towns, Maine’s rugged natural beauty provides a backdrop on which personal transformation is all but inevitable.
