Take it from the experts! Their advice comes from many dedicated hours to children nationwide - and unfortunately some situations they’ve encountered in real life. 👧🏼 🧒🏾 👦🏼👶🏿

Difficulty navigating steps and curbs is actually a common symptom we hear from kids (& adults!) When someone struggles with depth perception, judging distances becomes harder.
Things like:
🧱 Tripping on stairs
🚧 Avoiding curbs or uneven ground
⚽ Missing a ball in sports
📚 Skipping words or lines while reading

These aren’t just “clumsy kid” moments—they can be signs that the eyes aren’t working well together or that the brain is struggling to process 3D space.

The good news? These skills can be tested and trained.

If your child avoids steps, stumbles more than usual, or seems unsure navigating new spaces—it might be time to check their functional vision, not just their eyesight.

👓 Vision is more than 20/20.
It’s how the eyes, brain, and body work together to move through the world confidently.

Give some ❤️ to our recent vision therapy graduates! Read more about their experiences below:
☀️Evan: “He came in because of lazy eye, poor eye sight in right eye, and lack of stereopsis. During therapy he noticed improvement with reading, no more double vision, both eyes working together, no more lazy eye, and seeing better overall.”
☀️ Michael: “I came into vision therapy because of a lot of double vision when reading. Now my vision is a lot better. I don’t have to wear glasses anymore.”
☀️ Ken: “Honestly I didn’t think I had any issues but Dr Lenart clearly believed I needed vision therapy after surgery. Now I am more aware and consciously able to do and know when I am diverging and converging. My favorite part of therapy was Ginger, but chicken dino is a close second...distant second :) For those who are starting vision therapy soon, verbalize, use as many words as possible so the team knows what you are experiencing and can best help you.”
☀️ Rosa: “Before therapy P.E. was hard. I ran into stuff all the time. Worksheets at school felt hard, I couldn’t explain why I couldn’t “see” it even though I had my glasses on. I had headaches and was cranky. I got car sick all the time. During vision therapy I learned how to jump rope! I played 4-square at recess. Now I’m on a soccer team. I can read chapter books and it’s not hard. My favorite part of therapy was naming all the squishy monster toys we used, and playing Road Race on the big screen and being with Teresa.”
☀️ Sara: “After being in therapy, I noticed a big change in how much depth I could see. I went on a road trip and the depth between the mountains and the clouds was so much more than I had seen before and it really made views outside even better. I really appreciate the new awareness of depth.”
☀️ Brooklyn: “Before therapy I had double vision. It was hard to see words. Vision therapy helped me with better depth and reading. My favorite part was the prizes!”
☀️ Madi: “I liked getting the chance to play fun games.”
☀️ Emily: “Before vision therapy I experienced headaches. During therapy I had improvement and now I can cross my eyes. My favorite part was the games.”

Also congratulations to ☀️ Ashlynn!

At Summer Vision Center, we know kids don’t just need smaller glasses frames—they need a whole different approach to eye care. 💛

From the moment they walk in, we create a space that’s welcoming, fun, and built around how kids see and learn.

✅ We understand growing eyes and developing visual skills.
✅ We make exams engaging and kid-friendly (no stress here!).
✅ We spot more than just blurry vision—checking how the eyes track, focus, and work together.

Whether your child is a baby taking in the world for the first time, a student learning to read, or a teen aiming for the game-winning goal—we’re here to help their vision thrive every step of the way. 👁️✨

Because at Summer Vision Center… kids aren’t just part of what we do. They’re our specialty.

School vision screenings will be happening soon if they haven’t already, and it’s important for caregivers to notice other signs that will not be captured.

Laterality—knowing left from right—isn’t just a “nice to have.”
It’s essential for reading direction, handwriting, sports, and even following instructions in daily life.

Here are 5 fun games every home should have to build these skills (without your kids even realizing they’re learning 😉):

1️⃣ Twister – Quick left/right decisions with hands and feet + balance challenge.
2️⃣ Hullabaloo – Fun movement game that mixes listening skills with directional awareness.
3️⃣ Blokus – Strengthens spatial thinking and mental rotation.
4️⃣ Perfection – Sharpens shape orientation and quick thinking.
5️⃣ Left Center Right (LCR) – Fast-paced token passing that reinforces left/right language.

💡 Why it matters:
Strong left/right awareness helps kids:
✅ Track smoothly across a page when reading
✅ Form letters and numbers correctly
✅ Follow multi-step directions
✅ Succeed in sports and playground games

📌 So next family game night… know you’re building skills for life and making memories.

Patching isn’t the only way to treat amblyopia anymore.

For decades, patching the stronger eye was the standard treatment for amblyopia. And while it can help, it doesn’t always solve the whole problem—especially in older kids.
Here’s what most parents don’t hear:

🧠 Amblyopia isn’t just a “weak eye”—it’s a disconnect between the brain and the eye.
That’s why patching alone doesn’t always lead to lasting results.

💡 Modern treatment includes vision therapy—which trains both eyes to work together, rebuilds visual pathways in the brain, and often improves depth perception, coordination, and confidence.

And yes, it can work beyond age 7.
The brain is more adaptable than we once thought.

Ask your eye doctor about functional, brain-based approaches to amblyopia. There’s more hope (and science) than ever before.
