Catching up! The past two months have been so full. Here are some October delights (a mix of immersive nature moments and new linocut prints). And, if you are around Ithaca on Saturday (the 25th), check-out an accessibility birding event at the Lab of Ornithology!

Coming soon- pictures from the ‘Together in Nature’ retreat in September. Stay tuned!

Wow. I’m still taking in all of the joy and connection and warmth of the weekend. I had the honor of leading an advanced wilderness therapy weekend retreat at Light on the Hill with the most amazing, talented, caring, funny, dedicated, and wise therapists and helping professionals. More pics to come. But I wanted to start with these. My heart is so full.

One more glimmer to share before I leave for the “Together in Nature” weekend retreat…
Our shaggy mane mushroom friend, in full inky cap glory! What a sight! One of my favorite fungi. I also think “Shaggy Mane” might be my next band name… or hotel alias.

And I walked out of my front door, right into the middle of a Cooper’s hawk eating a ruffed grouse. Both of us were equally shocked when I interrupted his dinner. Backyard wildlife encounters galore!

In AEDP, we talk about being a “glimmer detective,” on the lookout for growth, change, lightness. In the Plum Village Tradition of Buddhism, we talk about the non-toothache moments and the importance of slowing down and noticing them. Whatever words we want to use, nature always offers me an abundance of those moments. They are my opportunities to practice the art of noticing and they offer a counterbalance when the world is big, heavy, dark, painful. In the spirit of practicing, here are some simple moments from my walk to my house to my car to my office- a new pumpkin flower, growing in an overgrown bed in the middle of a giant industrial parking lot and a new Shaggy Mane mushroom friend, showing up in the long-awaited rain.

What are your glimmers today?

Did some solo forest therapy yesterday, in the serene Finger Lakes National Forest. And I stumbled upon a rare delicacy- our good ol’ Chicken-of-the-Woods friend. I opted to take home a pic rather than harvesting them. Such a fun find of autumn sunshine on a log. 🍄‍🟫 🐔 🌳

T minus two weeks until the “Together in Nature” retreat at Light on the Hill! I’m so excited to welcome back alumni (and some new practitioners) for another weekend of immersive wilderness and eco therapy work.

We all go through our awkward phases! My blue jay friend is going through his annual molt. All of his head feathers fall out at once and then new ones grow in. But in the meantime… I thought my middle school era was epically awkward, but he might have me beat!

July in latergrams! Wolf Tree Wilderness Therapy & Arts had a super busy month, full of moments where wilderness therapy, art therapy, nature, camping, Cyanotype workshops, and new raccoon friends intersected. Definitely staying wild!

My quick capture of a at my feeder this morning. I love the quizzical expression. My third bird illustration and my first finch. Making it a practice to draw every day.

Loving the supportive community that creates space for! And all of his helpful guidance and tools.

Our Saturday - The beautiful .
Here are some fun Blue jay facts:

💬 Master Mimics: Blue jays can imitate the calls of hawks! It's their way of fooling other birds or warning their own flock.
🧠 Brainy Birds: They’re part of the corvid family, which are some of the smartest birds on Earth!
🌳 Tree Planters: Blue jays hide acorns to eat later and often forget them, which helps forests grow.
🔊 Super Social: Blue jays love to chatter in groups called “banditry” (yes, really!)
🎨 Not Really Blue: Their feathers aren’t pigmented blue. Light scattering in their feather structure creates the color!

Welcome to our Saturday - The beautiful . As aptly states: "The Purple Finch is the bird that Roger Tory Peterson famously described as a 'sparrow dipped in raspberry juice.' Separating them from House Finches requires a careful look, but the reward is a delicately colored, cleaner version of that red finch. Look for them in forests, too, where you’re likely to hear their warbling song from the highest parts of the trees."
I had a treat the other day- from what I can discern, both a AND a arrived to feed together. As I am a mere at best, what do you professional birders think?
