November is National Epilepsy Awareness Month which is a time to raise understanding and support for children living with seizures.

A seizure happens when there is a sudden burst of abnormal electrical activity in the brain, which can cause changes in movement, behavior, awareness, or sensation.

If your child ever has a seizure, here are a few steps to keep them safe:
- Stay calm and gently place them on their side.
- Do not put anything in their mouth.
- Move objects away to prevent injury.
- Time the seizure. If it lasts longer than 5 minutes, call 911 immediately.

If your child has experienced a seizure or you’re concerned about unusual episodes, call our office.

Grade schoolers are learning to recognize and manage their emotions, which can sometimes feel overwhelming. Encourage open conversations about feelings, model healthy coping strategies, and validate your child’s experiences.

Teaching problem-solving and stress management skills at this stage helps children build resilience and confidence. Encourage your child to manage stress by taking deep breaths, talking about their feelings, or using drawing or journaling to express emotions.

If your child struggles with emotional regulation or frequent mood changes, call our office. We can offer strategies, resources, and referrals if needed.

Cow’s milk protein allergy occurs when a baby’s immune system reacts negatively to proteins in cow’s milk.

Symptoms can include vomiting, diarrhea, rash, or fussiness after feeding. Both breastfed and formula-fed babies can experience this allergy, so it’s important to monitor symptoms regardless of feeding method. While some babies outgrow it, others may need ongoing formula changes or breastfeeding modifications.

We follow evidence-based guidelines to identify symptoms, confirm diagnosis, and create a safe feeding plan for your baby.

If your baby shows signs of a possible allergy, send us a portal message to schedule an evaluation and discuss feeding options.

Helping children feel confident and capable sets the stage for success both in and out of the classroom.

Praise effort as much as results, and encourage hobbies or activities your child enjoys.

Modeling positive self-talk and teaching problem-solving skills helps them navigate challenges with resilience. Many communities offer programs, clubs, or sports teams focused on building character, teamwork, and self-esteem and participation can give children an extra boost of confidence.

Building self-esteem early gives children the tools to face setbacks with confidence and develop a healthy sense of self.

Want more ideas for boosting your child’s confidence? Or need help finding a good community program? Ask us at your next visit, we’re happy to help.

Did you know that up to 10–20% of children in the U.S. witness abuse of a parent or caregiver each year?

This exposure can profoundly impact a child’s emotional, behavioral, and physical well-being, increasing risks for anxiety, school difficulties, and long-term health issues.

Children aren’t always directly involved, but hearing or sensing conflict at home still affects them deeply.

Your providers at WellBeing Pediatrics can support you and your family by offering emotional health screenings, expert guidance, and connection to counseling or social services. If your home doesn’t feel safe or you’re concerned about your child’s well-being, reach out to us, we’re here to help guide and support your family.

When it comes to ADHD, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach.

Finding the right medication can take time, and factors like side effects, daily schedule, and insurance coverage all play a role. For many children, medications are started because they can improve focus and impulse control more quickly than non-medication strategies alone, allowing school and home life to feel more manageable while behavioral supports are put in place.

Our pediatric providers can help you weigh the options, whether it’s stimulants, non-stimulants, or non-medication strategies, and guide you through insurance requirements for prior authorizations or refills.

If your child has ADHD and you’re considering treatment changes, schedule an appointment so we can make a plan together.

Before your child heads out for trick-or-treating, keep these tips in mind:

1) Bright & visible: Choose costumes with reflective tape or give them a glow stick or flashlight.

2) Proper fit: Avoid long hems or oversized shoes that could cause tripping.

3) Comfortable mask: If a mask is part of the costume, make sure it doesn’t block vision or breathing.

4) Weather-ready: Dress in layers if it’s chilly outside.

What costume is your child wearing this year? Tell us below!

Tantrums are a normal part of toddler development, but there are ways to help:

- Stay calm: Your reaction can help your child regulate emotions.

- Set limits consistently: Clear expectations reduce frustration.

- Offer choices: Giving toddlers small decisions helps them feel in control.

- Validate feelings: “I see you’re upset” helps them feel understood.

Provider Tip: Dr. Kischnick reminds us that all emotions - big or small - are normal at every age.
Toddlers, however, often need extra guidance in learning how to express them appropriately. Caregivers play a crucial role in teaching healthy emotional expression, and toddlers learn most from observing us. Next time you feel frustrated or upset, try modeling a calm, healthy way to handle your emotions - it’s a lesson they’ll carry forward.

While tantrums are common, parents should talk with their child’s provider if tantrums are extremely frequent, last longer than 15–20 minutes, involve aggression that’s hard to manage, or significantly interfere with daily life.

Exam season can be stressful and exhausting, but maintaining healthy habits supports both physical and mental well-being.

Encourage 7–9 hours of sleep per night, at least 8 cups of water daily, and 20–30 minutes of moderate exercise most days to help reduce stress and boost focus. Eating balanced meals with fruits, vegetables, protein, and whole grains provides sustained energy. Short breaks for deep breathing, stretching, or a quick walk can improve concentration and mental clarity. Limiting caffeine and skipping all-nighters also helps prevent burnout.

If your college student needs us while they are away, we can see if your insurance will cover a virtual visit. We want to offer support even from a distance!
