Cold air can trigger asthma symptoms by irritating airways.

Using scarves over the mouth, following action plans, and pre-treatment when advised can help reduce flares.

If your child is needing to use their rescue inhaler more, has a nighttime cough, or shortness of breath with low impact activities, they need to be seen by a provider.

Review your child’s asthma plan this season and call our office to ensure they are up to date on their asthma medication follow up.

Celebrate love AND learning this Valentine’s Day with easy, safe sensory play for your baby. Sensory activities help little ones explore textures, colors, and shapes all while having fun with you.

Valentine’s Day Sensory Ideas:

Textured Touch: Introduce heart-shaped fabric scraps, soft felt, or fuzzy socks for tactile exploration.

Color Exploration: Use red, pink, and white toys or scarves to engage your baby visually.

Music & Movement: Sing Valentine’s songs while letting your baby clap, bounce, or swish scarves in the air.

Remember: Always supervise sensory play, and avoid small objects that could be a choking hazard.

Which Valentine’s sensory activity will you try with your baby this week? Share your ideas or photos to inspire other parents.

Kids need hydration even when it’s cold. Dry winter air and illness can increase fluid needs. Water, milk, soups, and broths all count.

A good rule of thumb for hydration is ½ ounce of water per pound of body weight. So if your child weighs 100 pounds then they should drink about 50 ounces of water per day. While this a good “rule of thumb,” it does not take into account health problems or activity level for an individual so always consult your child’s provider.

Also, always check with your provider before giving water to your child if they are less than 6 months old.

Give our phone nurse a call if you have questions about how much water your child should be getting.

Myth: There’s one thing you can take to “boost” your child’s immune system.
Fact: Immunity is built through everyday habits, not a single product.

Myth: If a child gets sick a lot, their immune system must be weak.
Fact: It’s normal for kids to catch frequent colds, especially in daycare or school, because their immune system is still learning.

Myth: Supplements can replace the basics.
Fact: The biggest immune helpers are consistent sleep, balanced nutrition, vaccines, handwashing, movement, and stress support. Supplements may be helpful in specific situations, but they are not a shortcut.

There are times when frequent illness can be a red flag, like unusually severe infections, infections that are hard to clear, poor growth, or needing antibiotics over and over. If you’re worried, it’s worth talking with a pediatric provider.
If your pediatrician’s office is closed and you have questions, WellBeing Pediatrics has you covered. Book an appointment and speak to a pediatrician from home.

Black physicians and researchers have shaped pediatric care through innovation, advocacy, and leadership. Representation in medicine builds trust and improves care for families.

A few we want to highlight include:

- Dr. Natalia Tanner: Achieved milestones as the first Black woman board-certified pediatrician and first to receive an AAP fellowship.

- Vivien Thomas: A surgical technician and pioneer who, despite immense racism, developed techniques for pediatric heart surgery with Dr. Alfred Blalock, saving countless young lives.

- Dr. Doris Wethers: A hematologist known for her groundbreaking work in sickle cell disease, advocating for newborn screening and improving outcomes for children, mentoring many Black physicians.

Running on coffee and cat naps?

Your newborn probably is, too and that’s normal.

There are many myths about newborn sleep like the idea that babies should sleep through the night early on or follow strict schedules. In reality, most newborns sleep 14–17 hours in a 24-hour period, but in short stretches because their tummies are small and their brains are still developing.

Night waking is normal, and safe sleep practices matter far more than long stretches of sleep.

Your baby’s sleep will gradually consolidate over the first several months.

If you’re unsure whether your baby’s sleep patterns are typical, call our office - we’re happy to help guide expectations and discuss safe sleep tips.

Winter blues?

Shorter winter days can affect kids’ (and adults’) mood and energy levels, and a little grumpiness or lower motivation this time of year is normal. But parents should watch for red flags like withdrawal, sudden school struggles, big changes in sleep or appetite, or any mention of hopelessness.

If something feels “off,” trust your instincts.

Reach out to us because we’re here to help support your child’s emotional health.

If your teen is more tired than usual, it might not just be school stress. Low iron could be the culprit.

Iron deficiency is extremely common in teen girls due to growth, menstrual cycles, and busy schedules. Signs include fatigue, headaches, dizziness, and trouble concentrating.

Good sources of iron include lean meats, beans, leafy greens, and iron-fortified cereals, and pairing iron-rich foods with vitamin C helps absorption. In some cases, supplements may be recommended.

Think your teen might be anemic? Call today to schedule a quick screening. We can check iron levels and help get your teen back to feeling like themselves.

RSV can cause serious illness in infants, especially those under 6 months. This season, families have extra protection available with the RSV immunization.

Babies can receive the RSV monoclonal antibody (nirsevimab), which helps reduce the risk of severe disease. Pregnant mothers may also receive a maternal RSV vaccine, which protects the baby after birth.

These RSV antibodies work much like the natural antibodies a mother passes to her baby during pregnancy offering protection before your baby’s own immune system is mature enough to fight infections on its own.

If you have questions about eligibility or scheduling RSV protection for your newborn or for you if you are expecting, call our office and we’ll walk you through the guidelines.

When the weather keeps your family inside, it’s the perfect time to build connections in simple ways.

Try reading together under a warm blanket, cooking or baking a new recipe, creating an indoor scavenger hunt, snuggling up on the couch with a warm cup of hot chocolate or enjoying a favorite board game.

These small moments feel cozy but also build skills like communication, problem-solving, and patience.

What’s your favorite cold-weather family activity?
